This is not an easy skill. It’s a variation of a typical reposition step but he can’t lift his pivot foot. The shot fake lifts his shoulders and he is still able generate forward starting speed and acceleration to rim. Athletic Move!!
Haliburton, is one of the best at using incredible early decision making to SNAP an on-time on-target pass. We talk about foot speed all the time. Hailiburton demonstrates incredible hand and wrist speed on his passes. He gives his teammates an advantage with an early pass.
Very simple concept: if your front shoulder doesn’t get beat you maintain a shuffle. If it does get beat you laterally run. Perfect example of a strong shuffle to take space away from offensive player.
If you don’t redirect path of downhill driver you get frozen w/simple float-jab. Defenders hands are invisible creating easier path. Defender needs to lift right leg up +lengthen right arm while getting 1/4 to 1/2 body ball side. This denies straight drive + move on crossover.
Gather-Step take off- a culmination/summation taking horizontal energy, change levels, redirecting most horizontal energy to vertical energy. First leg casts+ sharp post (greater knee/hip flexion needed to summate forces) to allow 2nd leg to post straighter (elastic) and elevate.
Maxey decelerates! His forward acceleration posture SELLS blow-by. quick casting and heel entry of left leg, while still holding forward flexion of hips, allows him to easily accept the load and slow down. His right leg polishes off decel and lets him organize feet into pull-up.
Basketball requires players to master curved sprinting. The forces generated due to the angles used when attacking downhill are tremendous.
trailing or side by side going over screen should be “Outside-Inside” footwork in order to take impact and “run the turn”. Players can “Wedge Lateral Run” or drop inside shoulder to skinny-up. Either way, staying attached is important. Outside foot goes first followed by inside
We teach this overlooked transition defensive skill often. It’s the 180-series. Reeves performs a 180 to a 180 as he recognizes the ball being advanced. He goes from delayed head/eye to early head/eye. Important!
example of FULL foot contact to allow quick change of direction. weight is on ball of foot because knee is forward BUT heel strikes to allow greater stability and often overlooked FRICTION factor. Stop telling players to lift their heels- sprained ankles and instability occur
Perfect example of a 4-step close out to off-set stride stop. Instantly performs a Hip Turn to hybrid lateral run right into another Hip Turn to shuffle to wall up. Shoulders led the cause, feet repositioned to create elasticity. Very effective!
Lateral shuffle, effective at higher intensities, must have push, open, pull w/ front side foot opening to capture greater stability/strength during pulling phase of lateral gait. Notice, every high effort push from backside leg requires an opening of front side. @MacFit_
Defense is a mindset and commitment to escape and attack space! The initial set position and posture says it all. When his lead shoulder gets compromised in the drive his commitment to the Lateral Run and re-establishing great orientation isn’t there.

Hachimura uses poor footwork. 1. Never creates deception to force indecision 2. Bails outs by getting on heels. 3. Stays in straight line as he backpedals. WADDLE SHUFFLE would allow him to have far greater coverage and versatility.
Great on ball defenders always have shoulders in front WHILE being dorsiflexed. Knees and shoulders forward loads the athletes primary “escaping and attacking abilities.
Reaccelerating (deceleration into immediate COD) requires full foot contact, ankle-knee- hip stiffness, and repositioning plant angle to meet the demands of the task.

There is still space for “non-representative” reps in practice. A couple of things to include: ✅ “Repetition without repetition” (Tks Bernstein) ✅ A decision or a reaction ✅ As many balls and bodies in motion as possible ✅ 2:1 ratio on reps on weak hand vs strong hand

The point on the L heel contact is huge The heel contact helps orient the line of force application horizontal and places more of the eccentric load on Maxey’s hips/glutes

My sons old little league baseball warmup/movement routine. Some simple movements combined with reaching, rotating, and bending. Stuff, many kids probably don't get much of these days. Add the bat to make it "sport specific" 😉 and baseball coaches think you are a genius! #LTAD
