Supreme Court arguments are lofty and boring, like when the lawyer for a top candidate for president is asked if we could prosecute a president afterwards for ordering HIS RIVAL’S ASSASSINATION, and the answer is gee guys, it depends, probably not.

Also odd: -She had to pay $50k bond on offenses that the bail schedule says are $0 bail -AG asked for a warrant (instead of summons) on nonviolent offense, ensuring she'd be booked + have mugshot taken -Her lawyer still hasn't been told what records she's accused of taking

@MatthewStiegler Bingo! How was that controversial? I teach that, generally, 95% of the dates don't matter. Key example of a broader point: judges & law clerks sensibly assume that what you're telling them matters and will be a tad disappointed to learn that you've plied them with irrelevancies.
@MatthewStiegler Yep. Cut dates and use reference points instead if you feel it’s really needed for narrative purposes. Order of events can be told without including specific dates. “Subsequently,” “next,” “then,” “after,” etc.
@MatthewStiegler I haven't really thought about it. Some dates are key of course. Dont over read this. But agree 💯% that a flurry with no tie in is not useful. But sometimes in an aged case, it emphasizes politely it's time to get going, or explains the delay. So, 🤷
100% good advice. Dates only needed when precise date is critical to facts/findings/holding!
Let the record show that the most controversial piece of advice from the office training I gave yesterday on legal writing was “cut almost all the dates.”
Unnecessary detail of any kind tires the reader, who wonders if they need to remember it, and distracts them from relevant detail. Sure, use dates where jurisdictionally relevant but not otherwise. You don't see a lot of "0n [date]," in John Roberts & Elena Kagan opinions.

@MatthewStiegler Hard agree! Even worse when they’re in opinions for no reason. Is this case about a statute of limitations? No? Which case was filed first? No? Then why are you giving the reader this information?
@AMTAppeals @MatthewStiegler I agree with the idea of cutting dates for most everything -- who cares if discovery was served on May 11, 2022, -- but this one will have a section on dates.
