@BCarfree @JPWeiland @ProfHewitt Still, if this result holds, Novavax is surprisingly effective against KP.3.1.1. Too bad the mRNA vaccines didn’t post similar updated test results. Since I’m waiting until Dec for a booster, will have more time for data to come out

@BCarfree @JPWeiland @ProfHewitt Thanks for the reference. This is a primate trial with a pseudovirus. Surprisingly S31del by itself (vs KP.3) restored neutralization level to more than any variant but JN.1. That seems unlikely

@JPWeiland @ProfHewitt I think mRNA should have the edge this year by targeting KP.2 vs. Novavax with JN.1. Last year both were XBB.1.5 and so NVX had the edge in lower side effects and possibly more durable protection

@HarryRBurger @JPWeiland The biggest factor in the summer wave is likely air conditioning with doors shut, hence focus on South and West. But this wave is higher than last year due to immune bypass of KP.3 and probably the West experiencing lower rates of JN.1 in the winter.

@missmayawolff @yunlong_cao No, evades does not indicate how much immune bypass capability it has. Looking at the NT50 log chart alone, looks like a 60% reduction in neutralization from XBB.1.5 to the same with F456L added

@tynemouthsw Recapping was needed for 1999 - 2005 era systems due to a bad batch of electrolyte. While it’s true some older systems also have bad caps and all electrolytes degrade over time, it’s much less common. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor…

But new variants reduce AB binding and thus infection protection is only a few months. Severe illness prot lasts at least a year.

@Catlove40476297 @TWenseleers Vaccine-triggered antibodies are narrower than those obtained via a breakthrough infection, only targeting the spike for example. Mutations with immune bypass advantage seen in recent omicron variants don't just target spike.
