Children's brain activity looks different whether they are reading narrative or informational text--no surprise that classroom research suggests our instruction for these genres should be different too (e.g., purposes established for reading, text structures taught, ?s asked...)

@nellkduke @FaithBorkowsky Relatedly, I wish tools for evaluating ELA curriculum asked districts to look for alignment with their state’s sci/ss standards. There’s an opportunity for cohesive, integrated instruction that is being missed when new literacy curric and sci/SS stds tackle diff knowledge.
An open-question: Should we avoid the term “background’ knowledge? This assumes that children must rely on experiences they either have had (or not). Wouldn’t it be more equitable to say 'building knowledge’? This assumes a shared experience for all students in your class.
This makes so much sense and should be obvious. Why try to reinvent the wheel when there are SS and Sci standards? Content reading should be tied into what children are expected to learn. I think @nellkduke is working on bridging this gap.
A critical reform we could make in ed policy and practice would be to signal to teachers in advance the knowledge domains of reading passages on state reading tests (which aren't going away). It would control for background knowledge and incentivize coherent curriculum.

@CreditFlex The point is we need both strategy instruction and knowledge building, just like phonics and language comp. How can you build knowledge? Through the use of text strategies.
