I 100% agree and want to remind myself and others that this applies to SoR and structured literacy as well. The research base is ever-refining, and we have to be diligent about examining/altering our own practices based on it. #followthescience
This applies to those in education who despite the evidence want to hold on to inneffective reading practices that leave so many vulnerable and at risk kids behind. The moment call for courageous leaders who are willing and able to keep their egos on check.
Wow! This is the way. And it takes a ton ton ton of work and knowledge and planning to set these learning conditions and that outcome. Almost all of it eliminating and editing out and refusing what won’t get you here.
Action shot! This 1st grader now has the skills to plan, organize, and write a story independently. Notice the organizer she created herself? So grateful for the work of Karen Harris and @thinkSRSD! Teaching evidence based writing strategies is where it's at!
I’m sure this has something to do with being the sarcastic, over-achieving, first-born daughter who also became a teacher blah blah blah but I have immense feelings of guilt and shame if I even think about abandoning a book I am not enjoying before finishing it.
@JamesAFurey If he doesn’t have a “fiddler” he is scraping his chair, pounding desk with ruler, poking kid ahead of him, tapping his feet or groaning. You choose.
@JamesAFurey This is unnecessarily condescending. Some kids benefit from fidgets, others do not. Every kid has different needs. They are not stupid at all, even if they are not universally effective. Nothing is universally effective!
@JamesAFurey Actually, no, they’re not stupid and ineffectual. They help my son manage his anxiety and when he was in public school, they were included in his 504.

@JamesAFurey I’m guessing you are overlooking the data showing fidgeting can increase attention. However, many fidget toys don’t actually require fidgeting
@JamesAFurey I have 3 children who all need something, to some degree. Middle and youngest child are fine with a bit of blu tack - both would prefer that whatever they use is not noticed by anyone. Eldest needs a lot more (but is not in mainstream)

@JamesAFurey As a former teacher, and autistic person myself, I fidget lots when concentrating. As a kid, I often rocked on my chair and would get told off in class for it. The fidgeting helps with anxiety. Appreciate the logic doesn’t make sense, but I swear it works.

@JamesAFurey As long as the children he need to fidget in order to concentrate (yes, that’s a thing) are allowed to fidget instead of being told off for fidgeting.
