@Suchmo83 I was most influenced by this study by Williams et al. (2016) when designing my study. It showed positive effects on comprehension when teaching text structure vs. a content only approach and a BAU control. psycnet.apa.org/doiLanding?doi…

Facts. Doubt many of my kids will say we wrote objective summaries but instead will likely summarize the text we read but not the nuance of the skill. When we can combine skill AND content into knowledge building = winning IMO
@tiffany_peltier @DanWuori I love this because it illustrates that children are not empty vessels- they are active meaning makers that are continually refining their understanding and using input from all their experiences to build their own knowledge.

@tiffany_peltier @jzstrong I came across Strong’s work last year and we tried the routine co-teaching in a Grade 3 class with a colleague. We learned so much together as a team and the comprehension and engagement of the kids flourished!
I’m so glad people are finally having this discussion. I wrote 2 books in the early 2000s about teaching text structure and using structure to help summarize. It has been so helpful for students. Yay!

Worthy read. Teach comprehension within subjects with informational text and teach how to find the meaning this way. Great idea on library collection development to support specific grades with appropriate text ~ like comprehension mentor texts for specific subjects.

@AmandaMGoetz My husband started a rule that no electronics are allowed in his truck — so boys riding to and from sports practices have to put them away. We literally had one family stop using the carpool so their son could use his phone for the 10 minute drive 🫤 Enforce the rule!

@Suchmo83 Teaching text structure improves reading comprehension. It's not just strategies vs. content knowledge. Many experimental studies and meta-analyses confirm this (Bogaerds-Hazenberg et al., 2022; Hebert et al., 2016; Peng et al., 2023; Pyle et al., 2016). Happy to share links!
