I don’t love the phrase “Reading Wars” because war devastates individuals and society… but sometimes I think it is actually the right phrase, because the lives of individual children and further generations’ quality of life hang in the balance. I don’t think that’s hyperbole.
Today I attended the retirement celebration for my school friend, Her Honour, Magistrate Jenni Bowles. We’ve collaborated over the yrs on Judicial College training on language skills of vulnerable children & adolescents. Her work on “crossover kids” leaves a significant legacy 🌻
@BarbaraBleiman With regards to Scanlon & Anderson (2022), below is what is explicitly stated. Three-cueing absolutely does involve the promotion of contextual guessing. (The "use of contextual information" here is basically an argument for mispronunciation correction.)

@dylanwiliam Science is never really settled. That said, the chapter I read on three-cueing was certainly unsettling in its selective referencing and (mis)interpretation of a very narrow area of research: x.com/suchmo83/statu…
@BarbaraBleiman So, I've read the chapter and it is just full of spurious claims. Reading researchers' use of models that include semantics tell us nothing about three-cueing. The authors' conflation of the entire process of reading with what is beneficial for kids to do when attempting to...
@greg_ashman @dylanwiliam I got a lot of brainwashing of the dangers of "positivistic" science in my doctoral program. If only it was compensated with sufficient warning labels about the dangers of exclusively relying on small sample sizes and qual research.
