Facts. Doubt many of my kids will say we wrote objective summaries but instead will likely summarize the text we read but not the nuance of the skill. When we can combine skill AND content into knowledge building = winning IMO
A3: Ask any student what they learned “today” and it will be knowledge related most often. They don’t remember working on “main idea”. The kids KNOW and are our barometer. #BmoreEdChat
This is the path we need to follow. If these kindergarten students can do it, why not ours?

Here's our first try! We will keep working on these sound/spellings, and slowly add more. If I did it again, I would have used sounds with more disparate articulations/spellings to get the routine. #KnowBetterDoBetter #PAWithLetters @SoRclassroom
Thanks, @LindsayKemeny for this vowel intensive activity from @Scholastic 7 Mighty Moves! Two of my intervention students have trouble discerning which spellings match short or long vowel sounds. The tent cards have the same spelling on each side so I can see what the kids do.

@FaithBorkowsky For several reasons, my hope is for passages on state rdg tests to adjust to the science, engineering, social studies, and arts standards rather than for the standards or curriculum to adjust to what's currently on state rdg tests. And yes, I think this would have great benefits!

Learning requires more than just encoding. One of the benefits of explicit instruction is you save time communicating meaning so you have time for the other stages of the learning process.
They then each made a final draft and an illustrated diagram, which took them 30-60 minutes spread over a couple days. That publication step didn't benefit their scientific knowledge greatly, but there's some value in 8-9 year olds organizing and producing visuals.
Here, third graders individually chose one of the topics they had all learned about throughout the unit and wrote a first draft of an informational paragraph describing it. With regards to the science, that was probably 90% of the value of the activity in 20-30 minutes.
Tried here in our life cycles unit to rescue poster-making from the heap of poor practices (because you do need some new things to put on the walls). There are tons of more efficient ways to rehearse (and we mostly do those), but occasionally a pretty artifact is worth it too.

My sense is that many teachers *say* they teach explicitly & then are taken aback by its pace & interactivity when they see it.

We model explicit instruction with our structured literacy lessons with teachers and even after talking about explicit instruction, the pace and expectation for student response/teacher interaction is almost always met with shock
