Imagine going to a car dealership and asking the cost of a car you want to order. The dealer tells you $2500. You pay it, thinking "what a great deal". Then, before you go in to pick it up, you get a text or an email saying the manufacturer is owed $25,000 and must be paid before you go in to pick it up. You think "well, I thought the $2500 was too good a deal" and you pay it. The car is delivered, and you go home. Three months later, you get a bill from the guy who transported your vehicle to the dealership saying you owe them $3,000 for delivering the vehicle. Then a month later another $2,000 bill from the guy who installed the tires. Then another $1,000 from the guy who put the oil in the car. And on and on. If you don't pay a bill, your credit is destroyed. THAT is the American Health System today.

The culprit is the new APG-85 radar. Lot 17 F-35s were redesigned around it, but the radar itself is running late. The catch? The new nose structure won't accept the older APG-81 either. So the Marines took delivery of the jets anyway and will install the radar when it becomes available. It is a perfect illustration of modern fighter development.
