@AugensteinWTOP @WTOP Always loved picking up random AM radio stations in the car from 100s of miles away, listening to the broadcast "whine" as I shifted gears using my manual transmission (another unknown relic for most of today's drivers).
Before Dave Johnson was added to my FM dial, it was Radio America on 1540 AM (now 900 AM) that bought up my #DCU fandom. Great times on drives home.

@CandyThomson1 @AugensteinWTOP @WTOP Interesting you mention inland. I remember driving on interstate 81 in Southwest Virginia and clearly being able to hear WCBS 880 from New York City. But not 1500 WTOP from DC.

@AugensteinWTOP @WTOP I remember. Memories that stand out are Larry King late at night. 11 pm to 2 am live... then repeat 2 am - 5 am. <sigh> His story about putting on a LP so he could sneak over to a "friend" nearby was a classic. <skip><skip><skip>

@AugensteinWTOP @WTOP The wife, children and I were in Florida in 1983 for a space shuttle launch. WTOP was loud and clear in the vehicle at night. 1010 WINS, WCBS, WABC, and KDKA have excellent signals at night in my car anywhere along the east coast.
@AugensteinWTOP @WTOP I grew up listening to Reds games on a transistor radio in North Carolina, thanks to 50,000 watts @700wlw after dark. When I worked in Austin, I could pick up the signal in my car on a clear night. But around Washington, I've had trouble getting a signal for at least 10 years.
@AugensteinWTOP @WTOP I'm torn on this one. Generally not a fan of regulation and even more so for autos-must-have-this type regulation. But I also do love AM radio and see its utility in emergency broadcasting situations especially
@AugensteinWTOP @WTOP I'm 45 and my dad listened to talk radio in the car growing up, so maybe that's part of it. Plus there's just something about AM esp when listening to say The Grand Ole Opry on 650 on the dial which I can get decently enough at night where I'm at.
@AugensteinWTOP @WTOP I grew upon AM radio! Listening at night was the best….i kept a list of stations that came through my old clock radio. Best were the ballgames from other cities! That’s when I learned that all stations didn’t start with ‘W’……KDKA!
@AugensteinWTOP @WTOP I was in Maine driving back from Acadia once and I was able to listen to a Nats game on AM. It's amazing what you can pick up on a clear night.
It's nice to still be able to hear Nats games when I'm driving in the summer...
