@measuredmom @devin_kearns I am trained in Orton Gillingham and teach middle school students. I also question syllable division rules I was taught. This podcast was helpful. My students who read below 3rd grade benefit from predictable patterns. As their reading improves, they have to become more flexible

I don’t love the phrase “Reading Wars” because war devastates individuals and society… but sometimes I think it is actually the right phrase, because the lives of individual children and further generations’ quality of life hang in the balance. I don’t think that’s hyperbole.
If there’s a morpheme in a word & students know it, ALWAYS use that. But sometimes pointing students to syllables is a good back up, especially when big word has only 1 morpheme (e.g., elephant)

@measuredmom @RplusDyslexia @PamelaSnow2 @devin_kearns Did something similar with “re-con-sid-er” yesterday. We decoded “consider” by syllable then added “re” as a morphograph. (First grader)
@measuredmom @RplusDyslexia @PamelaSnow2 it is very useful to understand that there are different pronunciations for single-letter vowels and that LE is a consistent pattern. Beyond that, less clear. There are just not enough convincing, and the existing data are not ideal. But polysyllabic words ARE DIFFERENT

@measuredmom @annbaum58 @PamelaSnow2 @devin_kearns I just said to Larissa last night, I`m fighting for them. You can spell with the rules and syllables and grapheme change on placement and work backwards to circle the morpheme to assist comprehension.

@measuredmom @PamelaSnow2 @devin_kearns I have been thinking a lot about the 2 camps in #SoR I saw Naadine Gaab is partnering with IMSLEC for Early Bird Screener, I think that`s the way to go. The #Dyslexia interventions are so strong.
@measuredmom @PamelaSnow2 @devin_kearns It’s difficult to assess if you have used them for struggling kids and done it with success. There are better things to fight about than syllables. They take 6 hours. All structured literacy programs teach them.
