This is why the Conservatives need to care much more about aspiring homeowners Far too many younger people stuck on the renting treadmill. If you're the kind of person who wants to buy a home at a reasonable price, who do you vote for?

50% of Northerners think Labour better represents the interests of people in the North - only 16% said the Tories But this isn't offset by a positive brand among Southerners. Only 36% think Tories better represent the South's interests This is 'worst of both worlds' territory

Good thread. I agree with the benchmarks - Reform should be hitting at least high teens, probably mid 20s in Blackpool S or Qs need to be asked about their capacity to realise the support shown in polls (either because they can’t organise or because polls are overstating them)

Under-appreciated point about this: The map here is a good halfway point between the standard constituency map (which makes it hard to see cities properly) and those awful hex maps that put Croydon next to Worthing

Not convinced. Labour’s super-progressive base is inefficiently distributed, stacking up in seats that are already safe Labour is right to focus on winning over 2019 Tory voters rather than worrying about losing even 15% of the vote in seats with massive majorities

Good thread. I agree with the benchmarks - Reform should be hitting at least high teens, probably mid 20s in Blackpool S or Qs need to be asked about their capacity to realise the support shown in polls (either because they can’t organise or because polls are overstating them)
What would be a good result for Reform in the Blackpool South by-election? How much of a threat do they really pose to the Conservatives? A 🧵 Until recently, Reform have underperformed in by-election in this Parliament, polling far worse than UKIP did in 2012-14

Look at the replies to this poll. Someone even suggests carrying out research on Angela Rayner is harassment. Didn’t think this was rocket science, but the public want politicians from *both* sides to be accountable for their conduct.
In today’s @MailOnline our polling finds two thirds of voters - including 62% of those who voted Labour in 2019 think Angela Rayner should publish her tax advice related to the sale of her house in 2015. Only 14% think she should not. dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1…
Pushing people into huge amounts of debt for a low-value arts degree from Former Ringroad Polytechnic which will provide limited prospects by suggesting they might live like paupers but become famous after they die thanks to once-in-a-generation talent is not good public policy.
Van Gogh only sold one painting in his lifetime. Monet died poor. Vermeer had to borrow money to survive. Sisley died unrecognised and poor. Instead of telling modern day creative people that they're worthless to society, Tory MPs should try and celebrate them for the joy and…
Great work from @edhodgsoned on how the public in Europe would go about reducing emissions from flying and aviation. Lots of interesting insights in the thread and report linked below ⬇️
✈️ Of all the industries to decarbonise, aviation has to be among the trickiest... 🇬🇧🇫🇷🇩🇪🇪🇸🇳🇱🇧🇪 We've conducted one of the largest studies of public opinion on flying and climate change across 6 European countries - and, while there are risks, there are also real opportunities
We have such an unhealthy relationship with our health service. And it’s getting worse.
I saw the brilliant Keeley Hawes in 'The Human Body' at the weekend, the Lucy Kirkwood play about the birth of the NHS. When her character is told that Nye Bevan's new health service is “bound to fail” she replied: “The idea will not have failed. We will have failed the idea.”
The cultural sector is 1.8% GDP - you only get to 6% if you include IT, telecoms, tourism, sport and gambling. Creative arts degrees have been disastrously mis-sold to young people: majority of CA grads earn too little to even start repaying their loans a decade after graduating
Creative Industries make up 6% of our economy: more than car and oil industries together. They employ 2.3million people. To cut funding is fudge-brained, cack-hearted thinking pitched very much at the highest level of economic self-harm. theguardian.com/education/2024…
@edhodgsoned, Research Manager at research group @Moreincommon_ ,said the three large polls suggested the Conservatives “are facing almost complete wipeout” in London at the next General Election. standard.co.uk/news/politics/…
Incredible chart from @jburnmurdoch in @FT which shows how extraordinary the UK’s climate consensus is. Working in an organisation that looks at polarisation in different countries I get to see how despite our problems, we’re relatively far less polarised. on.ft.com/3Dxxy1F
Some people on left are ambivalent about patriotism & national symbols. There is strong evidence that pride in being British is an inter-ethnic norm. All studies persistently find ethnic minorities have a stronger British identity than the white British & high levels of pride too
Keir Starmer faces discontent as Labour MPs reject union jack election flyers theguardian.com/politics/2024/…
Should the Tories build more houses? Results suggest electoral reward to building may be larger than it seems, as party will gain not only among those who become homeowners immediately, but also with non-homeowners who become more confident they will own in the future.

I hope this recommendation is something that all parties can get behind, teachers shouldn’t be subject to the kind of abuse and intimidation we have seen for instance over RSE in places like Birmingham and the failure of care for staff in the Batley case is clearly unacceptable.

Imagine how the BBC/discourse would respond to a campaign by Millennials/Zoomers that they had no idea that tuition fees went up, and that the taxpayer should hand out megabillions in compo - probably quite differently to WASPI I would imagine.
Listening to waspi callers this morning on the radio, two things struck me. All the complainants seemed remarkably lax about taking responsibility for their own financial lives - none of them seemed to think it was on them to find out when and how much state pension they'd get...
