EIGHT YEARS ON — PHILIP “PHIL,” FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS Today, Catherine Phil Sickle Cell Support Initiative (CAPSCI) pauses in solemn remembrance and profound gratitude as we mark eight years since the passing of Philip “Phil”, a remarkable sickle cell warrior whose life, though tender in years, left an indelible imprint on everyone privileged to know him. Phil was far more than a young man living with sickle cell disease. He was a beacon of resilience, compassion, and possibility. His extraordinary love for humanity, music, technology, and the advancement of society inspired both children and adults around him. In the face of challenges that could have diminished his spirit, Phil continued to radiate warmth, creativity, hope, and an unmistakable zest for life. Eight years may have passed, but his memory has never faded. As a lasting gesture of love and remembrance, his cherished name, “Phil,” forms part of the legally registered name of the Catherine Phil Sickle Cell Support Initiative. Every time we speak the name of our organisation, every family we reach, every child we screen, every person we educate, every life we advocate for and every barrier we strive to dismantle, Phil’s legacy lives and breathes through our work. His story reminds us that a life is not measured merely by the number of years lived, but by the depth of love given, the lives touched, and the difference left behind. Today, we do not remember Phil only with tears. We remember him with gratitude, hope, and purpose. Strengthening the Sickle Cell Disease Response in Dokolo District. This afternoon, we were profoundly honoured to receive a warm and distinguished welcome in Dokolo District from the District Chairperson, Hon. Peter Ogwang, alongside the District Health Officer, Dr. Ojok Samuel; District Health Educator, Mr. Ouni Dixion; and Assistant District Health Officer, Mr. Equene Ocen. Our engagement focused on strategic priorities for strengthening the prevention, early diagnosis, referral, and comprehensive management of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) in Dokolo District. We also deliberated on the upcoming Uhuru Sickle Cell Run, scheduled for 3 October 2026 in Lira City , as a catalytic platform for mobilising communities, amplifying SCD awareness, promoting informed health-seeking behaviour, and advancing evidence-informed interventions across the Lango sub-region. A key outcome of the engagement was the discussion around strengthening diagnostic capacity at primary healthcare levelp. Proceeds from the Uhuru Sickle Cell Run will contribute towards the procurement and installation of two haemoglobin electrophoresis analysers for Dokolo Health Centre IV and Aduku Health Centre IV. This investment will enhance access to definitive haemoglobinopathy testing, facilitate earlier diagnosis and linkage to care, strengthen clinical decision-making, and ultimately reduce preventable morbidity and mortality associated with SCD. The partnership between district leadership, health-sector stakeholders, communities and development actors remains critical to building a more responsive and resilient SCD care ecosystem. Lira City| kwania District Today, our team had the distinct honour of paying a courtesy visit to the Lira City Mayor, Hon. Sam Atul, at his office as we intensify preparations for the 3rd Annual Uhuru Sickle Cell Run, slated for 03 October 2026 in Lira City. Hon. Atul expressed his commitment to supporting the cause and called upon the people of Lira City and beyond to participate in the Uhuru Sickle Cell Run. He further underscored the importance of individuals knowing their sickle cell status before marriage, as a critical step towards informed decision-making, prevention and building healthier families. The team also visited Aduku Health Centre IV, where we engaged with the DHO, Dr. Okino David. He expressed immense enthusiasm about the facility’s forthcoming HB Electrophoresis Machine, expected to be procured through proceeds from the Uhuru Sickle Cell Run.
