🇺🇬 EXPANDING ACCESS TO SICKLE CELL SCREENING Earlier today, Dr. @DianaAtwine , Permanent Secretary, @MinofHealthUG , flagged off teams for an eight-day outreach initiative running through 19 September 2026 across Buvuma and Kayunga districts. Uganda continues to carry a significant sickle cell burden, with an estimated 13.3% of the population carrying the sickle cell trait and more than 17,000 babies born with Sickle Cell Disease each year. The medical camps are expected to reach approximately 10,000 people, bringing essential health services closer to communities through: Sickle cell screening and early identification 🦟 Malaria testing 🎗️ HIV testing 📚 Sickle cell awareness and health education 🤝 Linkage of identified cases to appropriate care At @Microhaem Scientifics, we believe awareness must lead to screening, screening must lead to early identification, and early identification must lead to care. 🇺🇬 FROM NATIONAL ROLLOUT TO STUDENT-LED HEALTH ACTION Following the recent flag-off of Microhaem Scientifics’ technical support teams across Uganda, our commitment to strengthening early detection and supporting the appropriate use of locally manufactured diagnostic technologies continues. On 5 September 2026 and still ongoing , @Makerere University kicked off the ongoing Pioneer Student Volunteer Testing Training Programme, bringing together student volunteers for practical training in Sickle Cell Disease, #HIV and #Malaria awareness, screening principles and the appropriate use of diagnostic technologies. MHS is supporting this capacity-building initiative through technical guidance, mentorship, knowledge transfer and user support helping ensure diagnostic technologies are used appropriately and contribute to expected public-health outcomes. This pioneer cohort begins the practical phase of the volunteer skilling programme ahead of rollout to other universities and higher institutions of learning under the Inter-University Health Ministers’ Consortium (IUHC) SCD Screening & Awareness Campaign. Once trained, volunteers will return to their institutions to champion health awareness and education and support approved screening activities within established programme structures and supervision. Under the leadership of CEO Dr. @CAkwesigye Akwesigye, @Microhaem Scientifics continues supporting the @MinofHealthUG and partners to strengthen capacity and bring quality diagnostics closer to communities.
