Hi @RogerLMartin If you were a company CEO and meet someone for the fist time and they ask you "so what's your company strategy?" How would you respond? Would you state the five components of the Strategy Choice Cascade? Or is it just the WTP/HTW? Thanks.

@RogerLMartin I have sometimes seen deep domain expertise present itself as 'domain dogma' - in the sense that people who've been operating in a domain for a long time tend to reinforce the implicit constraints of that domain, to the point they become self-fulfilling. To your point, good

@RogerLMartin If I remember correctly (I read the book when it was published so c. 20 years ago) he also challenged the notion of settled science because as you explained it's not how science works (I guess his research on chaos theory for Jurassic Park influenced his thinking).

This week features an original Playing to Win/Practitioner Insights post. This one is on Strategy, Anomalies & Scientific Revolutions: Why Settling Unsettles Me. rogerlmartin.substack.com/p/strategy-ano… It is a bit of a rant on why I hate being told an issue is ‘settled.’ It happens all the time, based on a clear desire of the person making the claim to suppress any challenge to status quo thinking. Challenging status quo thinking is my core job in professional life – so I hate it. The piece explains the origins of my thinking, which is heavily influenced by the works Karl Popper and Thomas Kuhn. But it also argues that you can’t be a great strategist if you believe in ‘settled science.’ You can be totally mediocre without working up a sweat – but never great. Hope you enjoy!

Rod, glad someone is making this point. Sweden figured out that people and companies need to be taxed under different theories. For people, make a great country and tax people appropriately for the privilege of living there. For companies, make it an awesome environment to invest capital and create the high paying jobs that provide a great tax base for the country. Only Scandinavia has figured this out. Historically US did the opposite - in particular it taxed business heavily which encouraged it to create jobs elsewhere - which business did. Not smart - though it has gotten better more recently.

This week features Chapter Ten of the Playing to Win/Practitioner Insights All-Stars Book Club: If You are ‘Too Busy’ Your Personal Strategy Sucks. rogerlmartin.substack.com/p/ptwpi-all-st… This piece argues that if you feel that you are ‘too busy,’ it is not because you are meritoriously hard working. Instead, it means that your personal strategy sucks. The way to improve your worklife and your effectiveness is to make better Where-to-Play and How-to-Win choices with your hours. If you don’t, you will probably burn out without accomplishing much! I hope this helps you work less hard and more effectively. Hope you enjoy!

The single biggest problems with charities is self-satisfaction. Too many leaders in the say: 'Why do I need strategy? We are doing good for the world.' That justifies sloppy Where-to-Play choices and weak or non-existent How-to-Wins.

@RogerLMartin Thank you very much Roger. I did miss that one. To give you a bit of context I've been contacted a couple of times by charities but I've always declined. Strategies for charities remain a bit of a mystery to me and I'm not sure I would create any value (let alone a good strategy)
