3) This particular use of 'they' was the American Dialect Society's word of the year (2015) and decade (2010s) as well as Mirriam-Webster's word of the year (2019). So it's legitimately novel, and worth talking about, and even worth celebrating. 2/3

Angry blowhard @houstonrbyrd gets a few things wrong: 1) Generalizing from an irregular conjugation of the verb 'be'. It's irregular because it doesn't apply to other verbs. 2) Equating the third person singular with the first person subjunctive mood. Not the same. 1/3

@Captain__Google There are plenty instances in English where verb conjugation changes plurality despite the subject (e.g. “If it were me”) The whole idea is a non-issue. Cobbling together a grammatical discrepancy is the lamest devils advocate shit. Trans ppl don’t wanna field ur dumb questions
