I basically assumed that childhood was a terrible experience for everyone. I didn’t realise that not everyone finds the usual demands of childhood impossible and can’t cope with the lack of safety and autonomy. This belief was one of the reasons I didn’t have children. 😶

@Autistic_at_40 same. outside of a few vacations, being a child was terrible. even in my worst days of stress and anxiety, being an adult is so much better in every way. even basic functioning is so much easier in adulthood due to having real autonomy, and it's possible to get real help too.
@JasmynWhit26145 I’m so sorry. And yes, i agree about infancy/ toddler generally. I also had highly controlling parents so I had no autonomy for many years. Only realising now the full extent of the harm that did me.
@Autistic_at_40 Same. I remember being 20 and all of the older adults at my job calling me selfish for saying I didn't want kids. I know how much mental torment I went through growing up, just trying to be normal. Why would I help bring a life into this world just to experience that
I basically assumed that childhood was a terrible experience for everyone. I didn’t realise that not everyone finds the usual demands of childhood impossible and can’t cope with the lack of safety and autonomy. This belief was one of the reasons I didn’t have children. 😶
