You should #Mask4YourMates because even if you don’t know it, you have disabled and chronically ill friends and whānau. Not everyone who is #HighRiskCovid19 looks like it, talks about it, or even knows it. You never know how many ppl you are keeping safe when you mask ☺️✨

y’all, I mean this in the most genuine, kind, non-judgmental way, but I am begging some of you to please stop assuming that every misstep someone makes is made purposefully and maliciously.
Forcing someone to express only positive emotions can stifle their ability to communicate + make them feel badly abt themselves for having human negative thoughts. The result is guilt, + stuffing feelings inside, which is dangerous for mental health.
I just inherently don't think it's sustainable to treat each day like a battle to be won against myself. I've got to be my own teammate in it, and to do that I have to start accepting who I actually am.
I know it's not what people want to hear but the best thing I've done for my ADHD is cut myself slack. It's not planners, or medication, or productivity hacks. It's recognizing that the world is hard for me to be in and I need to support myself through it with self-compassion.

Real people cannot queerbait you. Real people are complex. Real people can change and grow. Real people are entitled to privacy and safety, no matter how obsessed you are with their work. You are not entitled to the private lives of others. Real people cannot queerbait you.
And this all feels very important right now because with the increase in dysautonomia associated with Long Covid, there's a lot of predatory "just reset your vagus nerve" stuff out there (even though vagus nerve stimulation is like, also a legit medical thing.)
All this to say that I am deeply aware of the structures in place in my life that currently allow for me to try to develop a different relationship to my body and its pain, but that's not individual accomplishment, that's a material change in my working conditions, etc.
Can't send messages of safety about it being okay that you're in pain when if you go home from work for the day, that's no gas/electric, that's no food.
I've been reading up on pelvic floor stuff For Reasons and there's some stuff about "don't pee just in case, it's a bad habit" yeah okay but I wouldn't have to do this if we had accessible public bathrooms?
Which is why when doctors or therapists talk about listening to one's body and mindfulness and intuitive eating and all of that, like...that stuff ain't shit without a disability justice lens! Without a labour rights lens!
It's not that I didn't know how to listen to my body. The problem is that things like academia, commuting 3 hours round-trip to work...meant that listening didn't mean shit if I couldn't respond to my body's needs. But also: that's not just an individual responsibility!
As soon as I told myself that hey, you know what, I'll get to eat soon, it's okay, just a few minutes more, I felt calmer. I parked the car, took the groceries up, and now I'm here, eating my lunch...without the haste that I would have to if I were trying to eat between classes.
Anyway, today I went out for a little drive and to get groceries, and as I was in the last minute or so of my drive I had this wave of nausea. I asked my body, gently, what is up? I'm hungry. Oh. I'm hungry. That's what that is. "Can you wait five minutes? We'll be home soon."
Being expected to be delivering papers at 8am of whatever local time the conference was at. It not being "proper" to sit with one's feet up, to eat and drink as needed. Hell, even just going to take a piss. Have a body, okay, but discipline it.
My migraine brain needs routine and rest. I need time to wake up, I need to eat regularly. I need to respond to things like having to go to the bathroom. I just think about all the time I spent in class, at conferences...
My therapist and I are working on me sending messages of safety to my body in an effort to try and calm my nervous system and I must say, it is taking a lot of work to learn to listen to and respond to my body's needs when academia was like "naw, dawg. A body?"
One of the most depressing things about this cultural era is turning profound incuriosity into a badge of virtue.
