Mamuka Artmeladze was 43 years old. He had no criminal record. No charges. No court date. He entered this country legally and was swept up in a mass enforcement operation targeting truck drivers. ICE’s own records confirm he posed no threat and should not have been detained at all. After 4 months inside Winn Correctional Center, a for-profit facility already under federal investigation for banned chokehold use, falsified medical records, and inhumane conditions, Mamuka was found unresponsive in his cell. He was pronounced dead less than an hour later. The cause of death is still pending autopsy. ICE has offered no answers. This is not an isolated incident. Fifty people have died in ICE custody since this administration took office — the deadliest period for immigration detention in over two decades. This is a system. 🎥: @hereswhykevin

I want to give you guys some facts about General Chappie James. He wasn’t a “DEI” hire—he was a complete badass that had to overcome MORE than any white pilot. Did 178 combat missions—that’s like 7 bomber tours on a B-17 in WWII. His medal count? Impeccable. 3 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 14 Air Medals, Two Legions of Merit, and a Defense Distinguished Service Medal. One of the original Tuskegee Airmen, the first four-star African American General. Hegseth couldn’t sniff the level of soldiering and warrior that was in Chappie’s DNA. God bless him. And Hegseth took down his picture from a hallway like a racist little child, which is what he is.

The Clinton 12 were a group of twelve Black students who integrated Clinton High School in Clinton, Tennessee in 1956 following the 1954 Supreme Court ruling of Brown v. Board of Education. The Black community of Clinton had fought since 1947 for the right to a high school education. The local Black community was represented by Thurgood Marshall and other Black attorneys. The Clinton 12, registered and attended school for one day without incident in late August of 1956. On September 1, the White locals and the Klan launched a brutal riot. The violence became so dangerous that many of the Clinton 12 withdrew from the school. The principal's family fled the town for their safety. On December 4 1956 a white pastor escorted the remaining of the Clinton 12 to school and was badly beaten by a white mob. The school was subsequently bombed. Lesson: racists would rather burn it all down rather than have equality. #BlackHistoryWithLana #DemsUnited

These quick thoughts by Michael Jochum on the disturbing reason Trump gets as much support as he does is a must-read 👇 I used to wonder how it was possible that Trump could have won in 2016, and then again in 2024, given how emotionally toxic and depraved he is. I don’t wonder anymore. I think he won for that exact reason. Because he carried at least one broken shard to reflect the broken shards in millions of others. If you’re a racist, you found your guy. If you’re a misogynist, you found your guy. If money is your only religion, you found your guy. If your heart is armored shut, you found your guy. If you mock the disabled, you found your guy. If intelligence makes you insecure, you found your guy. If you’re a sexual predator, you found your guy. If you trade in humiliation and conspiracy and filth, you found your guy. If you’ve never done a single hour of emotional inventory, you found your guy. If you cheat, stiff contractors, bankrupt your obligations, and call it savvy, you found your guy. If you lie as easily as you breathe, you found your guy. If cruelty feels like strength, you found your guy. If white grievance is your comfort food, you found your guy. If he’d only carried one or two of these pathologies, he might have been dismissed as just another loud, damaged man. But he carried a buffet of them. That was the appeal. Millions could locate themselves somewhere in the wreckage. They didn’t have to agree with all of it. They just had to recognize a piece of themselves in it. It was never really about him. It was about the validation. The absolution. The permission. He didn’t invent the resentment; he amplified it. He didn’t create the cruelty; he normalized it. He gave millions the intoxicating relief of hearing their ugliest impulses echoed back at rally volume. Trump is a symptom. The deeper illness is collective. If there’s one sentence that defines his power, it’s this: “He says the things I’m thinking.” And that’s the part that should chill us. Because what does it say about us that so many were thinking those things? That tens of millions of Americans harbored resentments so deep, so seething, that they were simply waiting for a demagogue to baptize them as virtue? That after decades of supposed progress on race, gender, and equality, so many white men felt so threatened, so displaced, so furious, that cruelty became a political platform? Maybe we were living in a fool’s paradise, mistaking silence for healing, politeness for progress. Now the mask is off. Now we know. BREAKING: Pope Leo XIV enrages MAGA by formally apologizing for the Church's role in legitimizing slavery and for failing to condemn it for centuries, calling it a "wound in Christian memory." This is truly historic and Republicans are furious... “It is impossible not to feel deep sorrow when contemplating the immense suffering and humiliation endured by so many in stark contrast to their immeasurable dignity as persons infinitely loved by the Lord. For this, in the name of the church, I sincerely ask for pardon," Leo wrote in “Magnifica Humanitas,” his much-anticipated first encyclical. While previous popes have apologized for the Christian involvement in the trans-Atlantic slave trade, none has ever delivered such a direct apology for the broader role that the Church played in the survival of that deeply evil institution. The Vatican at times gave European monarchs express permission to colonize and enslave foreign peoples, slathering their brutal crimes against humanity in a veneer of Christian piety. In the 15th century, Pope Nicholas V went so far as to give the Portugese throne authority to subjugate and rob “Saracens, and pagans, and other infidels, and enemies of the name of Christ” as well as "reduce their persons to perpetual slavery.” Leo took that history on head-first— "Already in the early modern period, the Apostolic See of Rome, responding to the requests of sovereigns, intervened several times in order to regulate and legitimize forms of subjugation, and, in certain cases, including the enslavement of ‘infidels,'" he wrote. "In the development of her doctrine, the Church has gradually come to a deeper awareness of the gravity of these issues," Leo stated. "It is true that past events cannot be judged anachronistically, as though the moral criteria that matured over time had always been available. Yet neither can we deny or diminish the delay with which both society and the Church came to denounce the scourge of slavery." He added that it "took eighteen centuries" for the Church to "explicitly" recognize its "full incompatibility with slavery." “This constitutes a wound in Christian memory, one from which we cannot consider ourselves detached,” Leo added. The pronouncement has already been met with outrage from many members of the online right, who believe that the Western world should never apologize for anything it's done, not even slavery. Social media is aflurry with MAGA accusations that Leo has succumbed to "suicidal empathy" and "white guilt." These are the same people who believe that the Civil War was fought for "states' rights" and that the Confederacy was an admirable endeavor. “For descendants of enslaved persons, this is once again a much needed apology from the pope,” said Anthea Butler, senior fellow at Oxford University's Koch History Center. She added that the apology empowers Leo to “speak to the current issues of technological enslavement.” The Pope's slavery apology was part of a much lengthier document whose title translates to "Magnificent Humanity." It's largely focused on humanity's roles and responsibilities as artificial intelligence reshapes the world around us. Leo connected the topic to slavery by warning that these emergent technologies are leading to new forms of human exploitation and debasement, as neocolonialist labor practices are implemented to provide the rare minerals necessary to build AI chips. The situation in the Congo is particularly dire, with untold masses of men, women, and children being paid next to nothing — and in some cases nothing at all — to work in inhumane, unhealthy conditions mining cobalt.
