imagine if artists helped other artists get gigs. introduced each other to trusted and aligned bookers and venues. i’ve done this so many times for others but find it’s an extreme rarity in an independent ecosystem that desperately needs more village mentality and behavior…

So let’s say you’re an up and coming 4 piece band that gets an offer to open for a more established band for a 3 week tour. The rooms they are playing are between 1,500 and 2,500 capacity and they’re on the coast you live on, so you don’t even need to fly anywhere. Nice! 🧵

The only reason Deerhoof can afford to continue is bare-bones touring, one crew, tiny equipment, self-produced records, and we didn't have kids. Even so, our income hovers near the poverty line every year. I don't understand how newer artists do it. theguardian.com/music/2024/apr…

My kids were HYPE cuz a random Spotify hip-hop playlist played a song I wrote the hook & bridge for, I’m listed as the singer… not credited as a writer. Hard enough to get enough leverage to garner new opportunities & pay. It’s IMPOSSIBLE w/o Public credit. Just tired today…

Never discount anyone who’s been able to make a living in the music business for 20+ years. Most people can’t hack it for more than 5. Only the strong and passionate survive.
