A lot of people think they sleep soundly despite nearby #noise. Many get up in the morning thinking they slept all night, but data show they have numerous awakenings. The evolutionary “night watchman” function that causes these disruptions is mostly harmful in modern societies.
Twenty years ago, a University of London researcher compared the blood pressure and learning ability of kids living and going to school near airports in Europe with those who did not live under flight paths, and found that “noisy schools are not healthy educational environments.”
When Munich’s airport moved about 25 miles north in 1992, scientists found the long-term memory and reading skills of children living near the old airport improved when it closed. Kids near the new airport went in the opposite direction, and their stress-hormone levels increased.
In 1975, university researchers looked at test scores of students at a NYC primary school that was 220 feet from an elevated subway with loud trains going by every 5 minutes. The kids in classrooms on the subway side of the building were 3–4 months behind those on the quiet side.
In 1973 U.S. researchers studied primary school kids living in apartment buildings over I-95 in NY City. Those on the lower floors were exposed to more highway #noise and read at lower levels than those on the higher floors. The longer a child lived there, the lower their scores.
