It’s so interesting to imagine what differences we would see in the world if English hadn’t become the de facto global language So much of our internal thinking is based off the linguistic confines of our mother tongue
it’s mind blowing to me that istanbul isn’t spoken about as a peer city to nyc, paris, and tokyo. such an easy city to live in, so kind to an amateur photographer. less than a month left; i’ll be devastated to leave
This is surprisingly true now that I think about it. When America values the arts we dominate. I’ll gladly trade the thousands of pointless SaaS apps for another generation of Hemingways or beats

Full disclosure: I think Nikki Haley is one of if not the worst candidate, but this is just stupid. Have we really reached the point of vilifying people for the school they attended? Kids now need to stand up to their parents and ensure their high school is progressive enough?

Embarrassing that the AP would publish such a ludicrous headline. Are they also of the opinion that anybody can rip of their work without credit? How about I set up a website that’s just their work credited under my name? Sound good, @AP?

There’s a lot of discourse today about not reading Indie Books because of typos/errors. I’ve read nearly 50 books this year, and seen typos/errors in almost all of them. But only 10 of those books were by Indie Authors. Are a few typos really a Deal Breaker for you folks?
We are tired of high-nosed literary novels by privileged and overeducated academics with clinical depression, who tell us that everything is bad, and society is a Skinner box. Stop giving yourselves airs. It is not a great act of intellectual prowess to point out the gap…

This is undeniably true, and undermines all the work they publish. Every single book published by a major house has a huge asterisk by it, regardless of quality. The same applies to the major prizes. Nobel, Booker, NBA—all of them, without exception.

only thing i ever wanted out of twitter was to talk to people about art. say what i have to say but also hear what others who are serious about these things think. which is another way of saying im about to start blocking every disingenuous fuckhead in my replies/who qts me. 😂
I think young writers—particularly young men—are attracted to spectacle (esp spectacle they haven’t witnessed firsthand) and are unwilling to write about their painful, embarrassing, and vulnerable experiences. This can be fatal.
fiction writers—what is the main problem young writers have? often heard it said as pov issues but to me it looks more like time. they cant handle time. the force and weight of it is too much to handle early on. its easier to talk pov and dialogue etc so we end up doing that.
tfw the hill you choose to die on is…*checks notes*…blood meridian is a bad book. 😂 its akin to saying ulysses is a bad book. like…you can say this but youre just…wrong? you are free to not like books like this but you cant really say theyre bad. not really. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
goddamn. to live in a world where a writer like this once also lived.
The End of Cormac McCarthy's Suttree--A Thread: In the final paragraph of this masterpiece, Cormac gives us this passage:
The fact that student debt is #6 tells you quite a lot about the Yale student body.
Yale students were asked what the greatest challenges facing the university are. The top three answers were student mental health, diversity, and climate change.
I have twice now explained Plato’s theory of the tripartite soul to my infant and yet he persists in being ruled by the appetites rather than reason. Very disappointing to be honest.
People won’t believe you at first. They will laugh at you. Make fun of you. Disregard you. And in some ways they might be right to. Maybe you’re talking too much and doing too little. Or you’re setting unrealistic expectations. Maybe you’re just being an idiot. And that’s…
the loss of pitchfork = yet another loss for arts culture in america. nothing new here but the bottom line isnt money—its meaning. the algorithm is never going to give us that. when profit is everything what makes our lives better more beautiful more meaningful takes a backseat.
the people struggling with this post seem to not understand how profoundly culture influences…pretty much everything about us. is it all we are? no. but its a lot. as someone who comes from a very distinct non-american culture inside the US…you just gotta trust me on this one.
hear me out—what if americans were never going to be the best at STEM? what if american culture was always best at producing people who excelled in the liberal arts? what if all this time and money spent on promoting STEM was the like the year jordan spent playing baseball?

Babylon failed not because it portrays the violent degenerate debauchery of early Hollywood, but because it could not, no matter how hard it tried, make you fall in love with Nellie LaRoy (Robbie). If it had done that, (and cut out the dumb lesbian Asian chick and stopped…
The reason that leftist "academics", college graduates, and credentialists were upset about Claudine Gay's resignation wasn't really because of racism or sexism. It was because the public, aka peasants, pressured a member of the upper class to sacrifice her position. *Thread*
The future belongs to the creatives. Agree or disagree?
this is the way.
Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler played a small venue in Missoula in 2013 and stopped the show to berate the people up front taking video on their phones. “We are right here performing for you and instead of experiencing it you’re messing with your damn phones” or something like that 👑
Recent shot I took: “Heroic dose”. I’m really into abstract art and photography for those who don’t know.
My ideal editor of a literary imprint is someone who's naturally interested in all Americans. He can't be too conservative and afraid of cities and perpetually shocked by the seedier side of the human condition. He can't be too progressive and dismissive of rural folks or treat…
@meghan_daum @itsneerajadesh @Perez_Writes The "opposite of punk rock" is to say gosh, these gatekeepers dropped their pince nez when they smelled our aesthetics. Time to clean things up to gain entry to the yacht club. If "own the libs" seems tacky, it's probably still working. It won't forever but for now it seems to.
@meghan_daum @itsneerajadesh @Perez_Writes That's different than what you said before; that "the new critical thinkers" turn off elites with their aesthetics. I am saying that "new critical thinkers" giving a shit, or crafting their aesthetics to appeal to established elites, would be a pretty strange development.
@itsneerajadesh @Perez_Writes But again, that became/becomes true of all alt/countercultural movements. It's what straight edge was about. But at no point was Ian MacKay all, "Hey, you know, maybe a laser-light show paid for by Capitol Records would be awesome after all."
