AT 93 BETTY BROWN IS STILL FIGHTING Betty Brown just turned 93 and picked up an OBE from King Charles at Windsor Castle. Lovely photo. Lovely medal on a lovely jacket. What she still does not have, six months after settling her claim, is a single penny of the compensation she was promised. Betty and her late husband Oswall ran the Annfield Plain Post Office in County Durham from 1985 to 2003. The Horizon accounting system built by Fujitsu @fujitsu_uk told them money was missing from their branch. It was not missing. It was never missing. They spent around 100,000 pounds of their own savings covering shortfalls that did not exist, because that is apparently the correct response when a computer accuses you and nobody in charge believes the human standing in front of it. She is thought to be the oldest surviving victim of the Horizon scandal. She was one of the original 555 claimants who backed Alan Bates in the group legal action against the Post Office @PostOffice. She reached a settlement through the government redress scheme at the end of last year. At her OBE investiture in June she said she still had not received a penny. Meanwhile Fujitsu, the company whose faulty software caused this entire catastrophe, has been criticised by a committee of MPs for contributing nothing financially toward the redress bill, which is running toward 2 billion pounds. The company that broke the till keeps its money. The 93 year old it falsely accused of stealing from that till gets a medal instead of a bank transfer. She dedicated her OBE to the sub-postmasters who never lived to see this day. She has said before that at least 13 people are believed to have taken their own lives because of what Horizon did to them. She said she wears the honour for them because she still feels everything they felt. She also had a message for the Prime Minister @Keir_Starmer, asking him directly to sort this out as quickly as he can. That is a simple sentence. It appears to be an extremely difficult instruction to follow. Britain does love turning its victims into heroes once the damage is done and the bill has gone unpaid long enough to be embarrassing. Medals are cheap. Redress schemes, it turns out, are somehow still cheaper for the people who actually owe the money.

New laws in Afghanistan, introduced by the Taliban, mean that men can now marry girls at any age – there is no limit. Male relatives can arrange this with other men, and it’s only once the girls reach puberty that, in extremely limited circumstances, they can ask a court to dissolve the marriage. What’s happening in that country is horrific, and it begs the question why Amnesty are not putting all of their resources into tackling this latest child abuse atrocity.

In 1941, a 24-year-old woman knocked on the door of the British consulate in Bilbao, Spain. With her stood a Belgian soldier and a Scottish pilot whom she had just guided across the Pyrenees mountains on foot, in the freezing dark of winter. She introduced herself as Andrée de Jongh and calmly explained that she had created an underground escape network stretching all the way from occupied Belgium. She told the officials that she could keep doing it, but she needed funding to sustain the operation. The British officials did not believe her. The consulate sent an urgent message to London, and the reply was cold and dismissive. They assumed it was a trap set by the German secret police. To them, it seemed completely impossible that a young woman of her age could pull off such a dangerous feat. They refused to give her any money or support. Instead of giving up, Andrée turned around. She hiked right back over the treacherous mountains into occupied territory to keep doing exactly what she had promised. Andrée grew up in Brussels, the daughter of a schoolteacher. When she was a little girl, she read the story of Edith Cavell, a British nurse executed during World War I for helping Allied soldiers escape. That story stayed with her. When the German army marched into Brussels in May 1940, Andrée was working as a commercial artist. She immediately knew she could not just sit by and watch. She started small, volunteering to help wounded soldiers, organizing safe houses, and moving people between secret locations. But she quickly realized that hiding them was not enough. These stranded soldiers and shot-down pilots needed to get completely out of occupied Europe so they could fight another day. Andrée mapped out a massive, thousand-mile escape route that ran from Brussels, through Paris, down to the south of France, and finally over the steep Pyrenees mountains into neutral Spain. She called it the Comet Line. It was an incredibly perilous journey. The Nazis had set up checkpoints everywhere, cities were crawling with informants, and anyone who turned in an Allied soldier was promised a massive financial reward. A single mistake meant death. Yet, Andrée managed to build a network of ordinary heroes. She recruited farmers who hid men in their barns, priests who provided temporary sanctuary, and everyday families who shared their meager rations and offered a warm bed for the night. She personally forged identity documents, memorized train schedules, and studied enemy patrol patterns. Whenever a group reached the south of France, Andrée took over as their personal guide for the hardest part of the journey. Crossing the Pyrenees took two full nights of intense hiking. The paths were steep, covered in snow during the winter, and slick with mud and rain in the spring. She led men who were exhausted, terrified, and often carrying painful injuries. "Keep moving," she would tell them in a quiet, firm voice. "Do not stop." She made this grueling journey thirty-three times. Eventually, London realized she was telling the truth. They gave her the code name “Dedee” and began supporting her network, which ultimately saved 118 Allied airmen through her direct efforts. But the Gestapo was closing in. In January 1943, Andrée was captured at a remote farmhouse in the French Basque country. She was only twenty-six years old. The German secret police interrogated her brutally for weeks. She looked them in the eye and said, "I am the one who organized everything. I did it alone to protect the others." The Gestapo did not believe her either. They could not accept that a young woman was the mastermind behind one of Europe's most successful escape lines. Because they underestimated her, they didn't execute her on the spot. Instead, they sent her to the Ravensbrück concentration camp, and later to Mauthausen. She survived the horrors of those camps for over two years until American troops liberated her in 1945. #drthehistories

The World Bank ranked every country on earth for practical solar potential. Britain came second from bottom. Not second from bottom in Europe. On the planet. Out of everywhere they measured, the only place with worse conditions for a solar panel is Ireland. Norway is above us. Norway, where the sun clocks off entirely for part of the year, is a better bet than Lincolnshire. The reasons are not a mystery. We sit at 53 degrees north, the same line as Edmonton, Alberta. The sun in December gets about as high as a first-floor window and then thinks better of it. And there's the cloud, which is not a detail, it is the national personality. A square metre of London gets 0.52 kilowatt hours of sunlight a day in December and 4.74 in July, so the panel does nine times less work in the month your heating is on than in the month it isn't. Across the whole of 2024, British solar ran at 9.5% of what it's rated at. The other 90.5% is a photograph of a power station. Now the other column. The ground we're bolting it to is Trent valley silt and Lincolnshire fen. Some of it took three hundred years to drain. It grows wheat at yields that most of the planet cannot get near, in a climate so reliably damp that grass grows here without anyone asking it to, which is the entire reason this island has cattle and cheese and a butcher. So we are, measurably, one of the worst places on earth for sunlight and one of the best on earth for food. And we've had a good long look at both of those numbers and gone with sunlight. Somewhere in Namibia, which the same report ranked first, there is a patch of absolutely nothing, in full sun, wondering what it did wrong.
