Leadership AND Management: Why We Need Both Lately, I’ve seen many posts promoting the idea that “true leaders don’t need to manage people.” While I understand the intent—emphasizing inspiration, vision, and empowerment—this message doesn’t reflect the reality of leadership, especially when challenges arise. As a leader, I strive every day to create a welcoming environment, share meaningful insight, and inspire positive change. But the truth is, leadership alone isn’t always enough. Some employees, for various reasons, may actively resist collaboration or push back against initiatives. In those moments, management isn’t a failure—it’s a necessity. Leadership without management can be just as ineffective as management without leadership. The key is finding the balance: guiding with compassion while holding people accountable, inspiring growth while maintaining the structure needed for progress. That’s not micromanagement—it’s dedication to the mission, the team, and the individuals we serve. I hope we can move past the rhetoric of “leadership over management” and embrace a holistic approach. Great leadership and effective management go hand in hand when driven by a genuine commitment to our workforce. To me, that is what human leadership truly means: leading with vision and managing with care.
