Since Minnesota officials refuse to act, it now falls to this grieving family to ensure these officers are taken off the street and that Minnesotans can trust their demands for reform were not in vain. We are honored to assist them.
These officers charged into a situation, issued aggressive and contradictory commands, breached an apartment door with no exigent reason, and killed a confused elderly war hero in under 30 seconds.
The post-2020 George Floyd reforms were supposed to stop this from happening. Indeed, St. Paul Police implemented new policies and training. But these reforms are given lip service at best by officers.
They deserve nothing less, and in truth, so much more. And Hmong elders certainly deserve better than to be senselessly killed while alone, confused, and in the midst of crisis.
There needs to be more awareness, among both civil servants and the community at large, of just who these people who are, what they did for us, what they’ve gone through, and why we need to be careful with them.
Those are the two worlds they knew: The simple but regimented life they learned at their parents’ knees, and the frantic violence of a fight for survival against a well-armed attacker.
Hmong elders come from a society with its own set of complex rules and boundaries, especially as it concerns one’s own abode, all while also suffering from extreme war trauma.
And in this case, the Hmong community is outraged by the callous treatment of one of their elders. Last year, in a letter to various Minnesota officials, I wrote about my experience representing Hmong elders in prior cases:
Despite their presence in St. Paul for many years, the city has not afforded the proper respect to its Hmong community, and poor interactions with the police are not uncommon.
