The NHS has been great to me when I’ve had obvious, acute things wrong, things you can see/that show on test results. I’ve been (mostly)treated with dignity & respect. The NHS has been terrible to me when I’ve had complex unclear things going on,treated with disdain & disbelief

I'm sat in my living room sobbing that all 51 were found guilty. The impact of Gisele Pelicot is more than anyone can articulate. Somehow this feels like a victory for every woman who wasn't believed. It certainly helped me shift my own shame. Thank you, Gisele. #giselepelicot

I still can’t get over how I was admitted to a children’s mental health unit at sixteen and discharged three months later with a diagnosis of mixed personality disorder when my notes describe daily meltdowns and list my triggers as change, lack of routine, noise & strangers.

At this time of year, there was such a big pressure to be sociable. Honestly, Robin liked being alone sometimes. He wasn’t being rude, he didn’t want coaxing out, and there was no need to worry about him. He really just fancied a bit of ‘me time’ amongst the hustle and bustle.

You can walk in to a psychiatric appointment and be diagnosed with a personality disorder within minutes. You wait on a waiting list for an autism or ADHD assessment for YEARS. The absurdity of our system will never not baffle me.

A new study found that 21% of autistic people had PTSD compared to 4% of non-autistic people, despite exposure to trauma being similar, suggesting that autistic people are more likely to develop PTSD. Trauma services must be autism friendly and adjusted for autistic people.

I’ve never met a trauma survivor about whom I’ve thought, “their ‘disordered’ personality is clearly the problem here.” I’ve met plenty of survivors whose personalities had been temporarily hijacked by trauma memories and symptoms— and who started feeling like themselves again once they were properly validated, resourced, and supported in recovery.

some hard truths to learn about being autistic: i don’t mask as well as i think i do. i didn’t mask as well as i think i did. it’s not that i ‘don’t look autistic’. it is that they know i am different but cannot place it. they don’t know what to look for.
