Memorizing for fluency facts is important. However, I’m not convinced memorizing most math formulas is still necessary. “Hey Siri, what’s the formula for…” didn’t exist 20 years ago. Having to recall some of these math formulas should go away. Focus on applications.

You have to separate the compliance component from the learning component of the grade. Otherwise you can’t provide quality feedback. We have found a way to harness the specificity of standards based without sacrificing our traditional 100 point scale. skillsbasedclassroom.com

Unfortunately, this is common in an antiquated system that is set up to favor students who are compliant and score points (regardless of how they got them). Assessments need to change. Teaching needs to change. We have an idea. It will cost you nothing. skillsbasedclassroom.com

@SkillsBased22 I couldn’t agree more. I’ve spoken to teachers who can’t stand half of their students. Not every kid is an apple polisher. Meet kids where they are.
From an article I wrote ten years ago... "The majority of coaches at all levels of sport were not gifted athletes. They achieved limited success by out-working their competition. Generally speaking, coaches are workaholics. Their creed comes from motivational clichés. As you…
AP Calculus students had an opportunity to improve their grades in any skill of their choosing today. 20 (out of 26) students demonstrated growth in at least one area of weakness! Offering retake assessments allows kids extra time to understand complicated concepts.
This is exactly why behaviors need to be eliminated (or at least separated) as a factor when recording grades. Rewarding kids’ grades because they took notes or participated is simply rewarding them for obedience. It has no academic substance.

More doesn’t necessarily mean better. Don’t worry about how much material you teach. Focus on what you can teach them to do well.

Every week, we have Feedback Fridays! Have a short (1-2 minutes) conversation with every student to review assessments and clarify expectations for the week. Make sure the student and teacher are on the same page. Best thing I’ve ever done.

We use 4 levels. Three of them are “passing” and one is “not yet”. It works for us. Students often want to advance through the basic->strong->mastery levels once they understand a concept. Offering retakes to achieve mastery is key. The students’ competitive nature takes over.

Taking a chance on change can make it better!
We’ve had a great response from our recent ICTM presentation. Several schools have reached out to learn more about our Skills Based Classroom approach. If anyone wants to learn more about, check us out at skillsbasedclassroom.com

Grading w/ zeros is problematic because they are most often used to address behavior, not learning. Missing assignments or tests doesn't mean zero learning. Like the famous astronomer Carl Sagan once reminded us, "Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence." 🧠🔭💯 #edchat

Miscellaneous Mondays are the best! Every Monday we break away from traditional instruction and implement activities that challenge thinking and allow the students to create their own learning strategies. Sometimes it’s closely related to our current topic. Sometimes it isn’t.

Ss seem happy with this. Seems to be lowering anxiety. Gradual release of false certainty, perhaps. Thoughts?

@SkillsBased22 I am not sure I could handle 30 siri's in the room at the same time...
@billdavidsoniii But they solved it, right? That’s an appropriate grade level method for solving. My hope is that, in elementary school, we’re not pushing for efficiency but pushing for conceptual understanding. Getting it done quickly doesn’t equal better mathematics.
There is no reason why high school math can’t be as creative as elementary and middle years math.
@eduleadership Letter grades have led us to the place we’re at where administrators increasingly encourage completion grades and point padding to the extent that grades no longer mean anything other than, at best, the student was present and turned assignments in. SBG is a response to that.
If more educators carried around @kenoc7’s slender book A Repair Kit for Grading, grading practices would be in a much better state in our country. I don’t know of a concise text (just over 100 pgs) that does as much to guide teachers in grading reform. 💯👍
@eduleadership I agree that grades should also serve as student accountability--specifically about learning of prioritized standards.
@eduleadership Assessment and evaluation with descriptive feedback pointing towards a rubric helps show a learner what they are doing well and what their next step should be is a lot more relevant than a “B”. Focus shifts to Learning rather than task completion and asking if it ‘counts’
Great looking grading purpose statement from Norfolk Public Schools. 8 specific purposes that clarify the meaning & intended use of grades to stakeholders. The common element in each purpose: student learning 🙌💯👌👍🫡
This is a must read!!!!! 🧵
We're missing the point about math anxiety and timed math tests. Whether the relationship is causational or not is NOT what's significant. The entanglement of these 2 concepts is blinding us to the dangers each brings to a student. Lean in, folks. I'm fired up. 🧵 #MTBoS
And this thread too! Thank you for this!
I have 2 big concerns about the “timed math tests don’t cause anxiety” debate happening (again) today. One has to do with victim blaming. The other is about a research project I know is underway. 🧵/1
I still hold the belief that timed math tests are: - risky (⬆️ potential for harm) - least effective tool for automaticity (absence of joy, play, social learning) But here’s my 2 big concerns reading people’s tweets from today … 2/
Rubric Levels are NOT POINTS!! Rubric scores are NOT PERCENTAGES! You can not have a "points" column for a rubric like this. 4 - Meets Expectations 3- Approaches Expectations A level 3 is not a 75%. That is a huge point cliff off of perfection.
Since I got tagged for #FollowFriday , maybe it’s time for a re-introduction. 20ish-year math educator here, entirely within @IPSSchools ! I’m constantly growing and changing, trying to find what works best for my students. 🧵[1/8]
Far too often, teaching is about what is efficient for the teacher.
@SkillsBased22 I will check that out - thank you! Looks really interesting
