I appreciate all the contributions to my prompt yesterday. A theme was that if kids have "understanding" they can reconstruct anything they forget. I wish they could, but without scaffolding/prompting, I am not sure that happens.
It is OK to memorize things in math FIRST and build understanding after.
The first week of geometry I would introduce kids to the tools we use via the Daisy Construction. Compass, Cabri on TI-92/Voyage200, Sketchpad, GeoGebra. I would have an animation like this (this is the construction protocol in geogebra) on the board geogebra.org/classic/fzfgun…
This is what I had playing on the board as I played silent teacher on the first day of polar functions in calc bc. This helped me create a bunch of concrete cognitive hooks to hang new learning on and help kids uncover prior knowledge. geogebra.org/m/kxcjq9xs
