But, what hope is there for us to deal with the "usual" infections when not even the trauma of a pandemic appears sufficient to promote a long-term, cross-party plan for reducing the burden of infectious diseases, and in so doing, improving our preparedness for the next time...
One minute, you're safe at home, the next you're facing potentially waking up in ICU, or not at all, and you're separated from those that you love, completely helpless💔. Health is fragile. Anyone can be one doctor's trip away from severe acute and/or chronic illness, or worse.
I'm experiencing an acute reminder of pretty much THE major principle of infectious disease pathology... Namely: disease results from an imbalance between pathogen, host response (immunity and repair), and environment/niche. Any skewed aspect of this triangle causes pathology.
For most instances, the balance is quickly restored; we don't suffer severe disease, even upon 1st exposure to a pathogen, because our immunity is so proficient. But, otherwise "mild" pathogens can become pretty fearsome, for example, when immunity or underlying health is low...

Cancer hospitals do amazing, amazing work. They offer hope to those who need it & push for the scientific advancements of medicine. So to, in effect throw so much of that away just to see a smile “like we used to” is putting politics ahead of protecting people.
We have a duty of care. Any one of these patients could suffer from neutropenia. Any one of them could suffer a serious knock back from contracting a virus. And the tragic irony that it was health care which caused it. How do we allow this? How is this “back to normal”!?
Several people at #ECCMID2024 asked me after my ventilation talk what are we doing to make sure we’re more resilient to the risk of H5N1 transmitting in people? From a transmission and environment perspective, especially in healthcare, I’m not sure we’re doing anything 🤷♀️
@UKHSA So why are so many of us being excluded from the spring Covid booster and are having to pay privately for boosters (between £75- £99 for Pfizer)? Why have some cohorts been ineligible for a booster for over two years? Why are children not being offered the vaccine?

@cv_cev Given testing for Sars2 is extremely limited both in health care and general. How likely is it that there are many undiagnosed cases of covid and long covid with a wide spectrum of severity and symptoms. If you don't test, you don't know.

@SGriffin_Lab I say this from having lost one of my BILs to sepsis in Dec 2020, you are very lucky to have recognised something wasn't right & got help. The public need more info on sepsis & what to look out for. There's little awareness. I hope you're feeling ok & get back to normal quickly!

@SGriffin_Lab So sorry to hear this, Stephen. Sounds as if it’s been an incredibly tough time. Fingers crossed for steady improvement post completion of IV antibiotics. It’s true, we do take good health for granted, when in reality it’s a fine line, both individually and collectively.
With ⏫️ global warming, population, and habitat invasion, it's likely that another Nostradamus type episode will ensue. Yet, we ignore the erosion of our health security, hoping that the bare minimum will see us through. It's not enough, we should have learned by now.
But, what hope is there for us to deal with the "usual" infections when not even the trauma of a pandemic appears sufficient to promote a long-term, cross-party plan for reducing the burden of infectious diseases, and in so doing, improving our preparedness for the next time...
I suppose this is obvious, but it strikes me that society and governments take good health for granted, right from the micro up to the macro. #AMR is a classic case - and I include antivirals here - yes, there's now recognition and investment, but it's piecemeal cf what's needed.
One minute, you're safe at home, the next you're facing potentially waking up in ICU, or not at all, and you're separated from those that you love, completely helpless💔. Health is fragile. Anyone can be one doctor's trip away from severe acute and/or chronic illness, or worse.
I'm experiencing an acute reminder of pretty much THE major principle of infectious disease pathology... Namely: disease results from an imbalance between pathogen, host response (immunity and repair), and environment/niche. Any skewed aspect of this triangle causes pathology.
For most instances, the balance is quickly restored; we don't suffer severe disease, even upon 1st exposure to a pathogen, because our immunity is so proficient. But, otherwise "mild" pathogens can become pretty fearsome, for example, when immunity or underlying health is low...

@cfs_jo @girlnextshore Such a missed opportunity to model best practice & to example set for putting patient care & wellbeing above photo ops. Any one of the visitors could be harbouring illnesses which could make all the diff to a patient & their family! Only takes one cough, one “bug”.

Cancer hospitals do amazing, amazing work. They offer hope to those who need it & push for the scientific advancements of medicine. So to, in effect throw so much of that away just to see a smile “like we used to” is putting politics ahead of protecting people.
