This piece makes many excellent points. Concern around assisted dying legalisation is valid and real, and deserves our deepest thought and scrutiny. Not snide ‘jokes’ about granny killers.

This is important for us in #Scotland Just why has @Liam4Orkney name his Bill wrongly as "Assisted Dying" When in fact he is asking for #PhysicianAssistedSuicide Why not call it what it is @ScotParl This is a question for you to ask @Liam4Orkney

And yet recent Westminster HSCC report on assisted dying claimed there was no impact on palliative care, despite growing evidence to the contrary. Did they really look at the evidence or just speak to assisted dying providers and campaigners?

Interesting that no vet would give oral drugs to euthanase a pet. Why? Ineffective, unreliable & causes vomiting. And yet, the oral route is what Scotland is proposing. So, not ok pets, but ok for humans? Time to rethink assisted dying.

And @andrewcopson of @Humanists_UK wrote a whitewash of Canada's MAiD, recently claiming critics of MAiD were lying. In contrast, many in and outside Canada are realising the problems of embedding assisted dying in healthcare.

Another convert on the road to Damascus. The tide is AGAINST legalization. Why? Because anyone who seriously looks at the way #assistedsuicide and #euthanasia laws work where it is legal is forced to #thinkagain. thetimes.co.uk/article/why-i-…
The irony here is that Shipman would have been delighted with legalising assisted dying. Like other prolific AD providers he clearly got pleasure from each 'assisted' death

🧵 Whatever your views on assisted dying, one thing I’d hoped we’d all agree on is that the topic is ethically fraught & complex. Not so Matthew Parris. For him, it’s simple. Old & frail people *should* be killed - to save society the cost of looking after them. 1/n
Note too the current political context of stigmatising & dehumanising government rhetoric around disability ("sick note culture", "burden"). Populist tropes at the expense of the chronically ill. Who feels confident they won't seize on AD as cut price, bargain basement "care"?

If only ministers would see people with learning disabilities as citizens who deserve support for the benefit of all society, not simply as drains on their budgets and as political footballs - my short @thetimes column thetimes.co.uk/article/239558…
As a palliative doctor with more than two decades of experience, Better Way ally Dr Juliet Spiller opposes 'assisted dying'. She worries that it would: ⚠️ Result in abuses against patients. ✋ Undermine access to palliative care. 👩⚕️ Impact doctors’ ability to support patients.
@JasonD60 @Medic11358726 The BMA survey demonstrated that more doctors were unwilling to actively participate than were willing, and the divide was even clearer in specialities most likely to be caring for the terminally ill or those close to end of life. Maybe it’s you who has little faith, Jason.
Our garden is looking beautiful under today's sunshine. 🌺 ☀️😎 Each bedroom on the unit opens into the garden, providing the perfect space for our patients and their families to create special memories with their loved ones. 💙 #StOswaldsHospice | #QualityTimeForEveryone
@JasonD60 @Medic11358726 I was! The Canadian docs who like killing people are SO DIFFERENT from the Dutch doctors who like killing people, who are SO DIFFERENT from the Belgian docs who like killing people... Shipman is minor to what is coming.
The survey also found poor knowledge and understanding of palliative care, especially among ethnic minority groups of whom 18% believe palliative care involves giving people medicines in order to shorten their lives.
I took the time today to carefully read this article. I hope you will, too. Powerfully written and incredibly researched, lived experience is brought to light which disrupts taken-for-granted assumptions about #MAID, disability, ableism, and medical power. policyoptions.irpp.org/magazines/apri…
