@OliverStrand We always replace damaged or missing bags of coffee. Thankfully it doesn’t happen that often so it’s simply a cost of doing business. The way we see it: building customer loyalty through easy replacement is far more valuable than the cost of the lost coffee.
@OliverStrand On the roaster. And by the way: by far the easiest way to create a positive relation with your customers, if you react pro active.
@alexkaplan0 @OliverStrand Roaster here --yes, you eat the loss and re-ship the package, and call it an investment in a customer relationship. You bake a small fraction-of-a-% of orders as reships into your model. If you can't plan that well, you don't deserve to be in business.
@alexkaplan0 @OliverStrand yeah it sucks, but if you can't run a business based on shipping a product out, and then make the customer eat the cost if it doesn't show up.
This is absolutely unacceptable. I am also pretty sure I know the company Oliver's talking about.
Coffee People: What do you do when you order $62 worth of coffee, it never arrives, and the roaster started by two US Barista Champions says "ah well tough luck nothing we can do" + ghosts you?
@OliverStrand So someone from the post office, on the truck or whoever scanned it, stole uour coffee
@OliverStrand It’s on the roaster. They contracted the delivery. The only way it’s on you would be if you chose and paid a particular courier to collect from the roaster. Then it’s on you to reclaim the loss from the courier.

@OliverStrand The gold standard is Amazon and they have made it clear how the rest should handle such mishaps. Of course they operate at a scale no one else does, but they have conditioned all of us to expect that type of treatment.
@OliverStrand @mjbutterworth Builtwith.com will tell you stuff like ecommerce platform. They're using Shopify, but no way to know if they're using Shopify itself for fulfillment since that data can be exported to a third party app.
@OliverStrand I assume a middle ground. Hopefully I can get a replacement, but in some instances the roaster is unable to help (e.g limited release, not financially or logistically possible to replace), or unwilling. In most cases I've been able to get a replacement.

@OliverStrand I have always assumed responsibility. Customer care is important. @MercantaNA has been excellent at reimbursement when loss in shipping has occurred. In like fashion, I assume responsibility for losses in shipping to our own customers, both wholesale and retail.
@OliverStrand Not sure. But it's strange to me that anyone would use an e-commerce platform that doesn't insure shipments.
Shipper, ships. Get it right
New question for coffee people: When you buy coffee on the web is the roaster responsible for shipping mishaps? And they should replace lost/damaged coffee? Or is it on the buyer? And you assume 100% of the risk the moment you click PURCHASE?
@OliverStrand We ship a replacement right away. We then file a claim with USPS, which is tedious and not always successful. I wish we could use only UPS but for small packages USPS is significantly cheaper. My thought: The shipment is our responsibility until it’s in the customer’s hands.
