Lots of new homes in the urban core. Fantastic. This is exactly where we should be building lots of new housing. But now there's a clear need for better public transit. Bus lanes and BRT can help, but long term I dream of a North Park/Hillcrest/Bankers Hill trolley or subway.

It used to take 191 taps to sign up and ride transit in San Diego, now it'll take just one. Contactless payments launch today! I never would've guessed my tweet would lead to the creation of @ride_sd and so many people coming together to make easy fare payments a reality.

Signing up for a transit pass in San Diego is anything but PRONTO It took me 191 clicks to sign up and load money into the Pronto App. It took 13 clicks to sign up and pay for Uber. Improving first time user experience is a must if we want more people taking transit, a thread⤵️

@AustinJEvans @mckelmer Coming soon™, my understanding is it would have delayed rollout. I’m glad they released without waiting for capping, it’s pretty rare for people to hit fare caps given the generous free transfer rules (since often your return trip is included). Would be nice eventually though.

@ibeshitin I've tested that transfers work (you only get charged once within a 2 hour window), unsure right now about fare capping. Transfers working is the important piece IMO. Pretty rare to hit fare caps with the generous transfer rules.

It's happening! I just used my credit card to pay for the bus! MTS has entered the final testing phases of contactless payments ahead of the launch in the next week or so.

@mtnpassiknow @sdmts One adult fare per card, because they allow transfers. If you tap on another validator within 2hrs of the first tap, you won't be charged again. It's great they included transfers with this. I'm sure there will be a FAQ and guide coming out from MTS once it officially launches.

@LisaHalverstadt Back then fines were $192 and went through the court system . The proposal yesterday was for a $25 fine that avoided the court system, with a community service option for those who couldn’t pay even $25. Far more forgiving.
