Our district PD today was a 3 hour video of a keynote given at some conference and before you ask, of course this was an outside edu consulting company that provided this "training" truly comical levels of phoning it in lmao

The "fun" question of the day was "how much money would it take for you to eat a whole piece of paper?" One kid said, "I'd do it for free" and then proceeded to slowly eat an entire sheet of printer paper during class. I've never laughed harder lmao

for those who have used the @statsmedic skittles lesson, do you give each kid a sample of 5 random skittles (repeated colors ok) or each kid exactly one of each color? Trying to figure out which makes more sense with the conditions
gunna toot my own horn: I have gotten SO much better at teaching both sampling distributions and the unit circle, two topics that are normally very challenging for students to understand. This has come from years of reflection and analyzing my student's data. proud of myself 🥲

All teaching is tough work, but the thing about k-12 classroom teaching is in an important sense it's a job designed for you to fail at.
I'm puzzled that I still respond to "we're new to desmos" posts. At this point I just need to know where the rocks you escaped from under are located?
@math_edu_design You are likely correct. Is there not some responsibility on the part of educators to be cognizant of their professional environment? We should expect this from our colleagues.
@kathyhen_ I mean, I want to be understanding, but if you only discovered desmos yesterday, then maybe they are much deeper issues in your educational community.

@LarsAFlaa @AnkerMath @benjaminjriley @mpershan I've actually found it pretty manageable, as long has they're solid on right triangle trig. Starting with a diagram like this, tell students, "find h, then find a." Repeat the process with several triangles until they've internalized the steps. Then generalize to letters.
@AnkerMath @mpershan I don't disagree here either, but..."comprehension" is doing a lot of work here in the context of reading goals. Another word we use here is "literate" which actually encompasses a pretty broad swath of knowledge and skills and such.

@benjaminjriley @mpershan imo, the goal of reading is clear: be able to read fluently and with comprehension. the goals of math are less agreed upon-- do you prioritize fluency? problem solving? perseverance? conceptual understanding? how you teach is informed by what you consider the most important
