There are pieces of poetry, literature, and philosophy that I only come to appreciate after I experience something important and realize they encapsulate that experience. Until then, the thing just seemed kind of mid. I wonder how many gems are still hidden in the sea of mid art.
Most of the time you don't really notice the world changing. Then one day you're sitting in the back of a driverless car, listening to music on your phone while asking an AI something, when suddenly you're struck by a memory of childhood and you realize you now live in Star Trek.
I don't see a problem with Google's response here. If California says "in order to show these links, you have to pay for them", it can't get mad if the response is "okay, then I won't show these links". No one is obligated to buy your product. cnn.com/2024/04/13/bus…

It's famously hard to write utopian fiction that doesn't seem pretty dystopian. But there's also the reverse phenomenon where authors wrote novels intended to be critical of the era in which they live, and later readers find it all charming.
I remember when it was hard to get LLMs to write rhyming poems. Now if you ask them to write a non-rhyming poem they're like, "While I would love to assist, I must ask that you do not persist. In rejecting rhyme, you'll discover in time, that it's cadence will be sorely missed."
Never attribute to intention that which is adequately explained by RLHF being weird.
Now that we live in an era where bathing is possible, wearing perfume or cologne is just rude. Especially if you're going to be in a contained space but also if you're just going to be vaguely near other humans who can smell. No exceptions. All scents are rude.
I think Kant would claim we have indirect duties towards AIs even if they lack moral status, just as we do with animals. By lying or being cruel to an AI, we indulge in bad moral habits and increase the likelihood we'll treat humans in the same way. Kant says: be nice to Claude.
When people make claims about groups I'm part of that aren't true of me, I just shrug and say 'cool, not true of me'. Even if a generalization is correct, I have a ton of me-specific information that's always going to outweigh the sort of weak and indirect evidence it presents.
Did your thoughts cause you to pick up your cup? Maybe not. Have your past thoughts had a major impact on your life and how you make decisions now? Probably. When we ask about the causal influence of thoughts, we need to stop being so myopic. Thanks for coming to my talk.

I wonder if one reason consciousness can seem so mysterious is that we easily overestimate how advanced our neuroscience is. “How can we know so much about the brain and still not understand consciousness?” But in fact we don’t know much at all.
