The government just handed a private company control over the DNA of every endangered species in America. Colossal, a company valued at $10 billion, has just made a deal with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to collect and store DNA from every species protected under the Endangered Species Act. Over 2,300 species. Worldwide. Doug Burgum celebrated the deal, saying "the marvel of 'de-extinction' technology can help forge a future where populations are never at risk." Is that what they want us to believe? That this is a 2026 Noah's Ark, freeze the DNA, and the animals are safe, no matter what happens to their homes? Because right now, this same administration is expanding drilling, mining, and habitat destruction on the exact land these species need to survive. If a species disappears from the wild, this technology gives the government an easy answer: point to a freezer in Dallas and say the DNA is safe. That could make extinction feel less permanent. Something to wait out, instead of something to prevent. But that would be a dangerous logic to accept. A species vanishing from the wild is still a real loss, no matter what's sitting frozen in a warehouse. A real ark saves the animals, but that's only half the story. Even if a species could be brought back someday, what happens if the land it needs is already gone? DNA in a freezer doesn't rebuild a forest. It doesn't restore a wetland. It doesn't undo a mine or an oil well. You can't release an animal back into a home that no longer exists. Is this really conservation? The man who used to run Trump's public lands agency is now suing to erase 740,000 acres of protected desert. On paper, it's just a Michigan miner and a small off-road group from Idaho. But dig one layer deeper, and this "grassroots" lawsuit leads straight back to the same men who ran Trump's Interior Department — and the same oil money that's funded them for decades. They're suing to erase Chuckwalla National Monument in Southern California — 740,000 acres sacred to 13 Tribal Nations, home to centuries-old petroglyphs and one of the last strongholds for the desert tortoise. The lawyers representing them: Mountain States Legal Foundation and the Texas Public Policy Foundation. Neither firm charges these plaintiffs a dime. Both are "public interest" law firms with a long track record of challenging federal land and environmental regulations - and this case gives them a chance to go after something bigger than one mining claim: the Antiquities Act itself, the 120-year-old law every president has used to protect places like Bears Ears and Joshua Tree. Torongo's mining claim became one of the doors they walked through to get at it. Here's the part that should stop you cold. Mountain States Legal Foundation was led for nearly 30 years by William Perry Pendley - the same man who became acting head of the Bureau of Land Management under Trump in 2019, and who personally authored Project 2025's Chapter 16, titled "Department of the Interior" — calling for exactly this kind of rollback. The other law firm, Texas Public Policy Foundation, has sent at least 8 of its own senior staff straight into Trump administration jobs. It's also taken money directly from American First Legal Foundation - a group founded by and aligned with Trump himself. Both law firms are funded by the same donors: Koch family foundations, ExxonMobil, the oil and gas lobby - the same interests standing to profit if this monument's protections disappear. If this lawsuit wins, it doesn't just threaten one desert. Legal experts warn it could gut the president's power to protect any large landscape ever again — Bears Ears, Grand Staircase, all of it. He used to run the BLM. Now he's suing to erase a monument it protects. What does that tell you? #DemsUnited
