We don’t talk enough about what meltdowns can look like in #Autistic adults. Sometimes it’s as simple as letting out everything we have been holding in by masking. Sadly, that can feel hurtful and surprising to others.

my bff from childhood reached out to me. this was the friend i had that was sort of like a mother hen. she did my make up every day, her home was a safe haven from my home home, her friends became mine, i dressed like her. i feel like every autistic girl had a friend like them.
we had a falling out. i don’t know for sure if we will reconnect, but it would be interesting to have someone from my past. but it is strange as well as i feel i am a new person. unrecognizable change to others. but apparent to me.

Autistic people are criticised for catastrophizing. The problem is not that we are wrong; thanks to our pattern recognition abilities, our predictions are usually spot on. The real issue is that we typically highlight issues that are supposed to remain hidden.
THIS is the misdiagnosis that is happening. Not people being ‘handed’ autism and ADHD diagnoses. But neurodivergent people being given inappropriate mental health diagnoses and inappropriate treatment as a result.

@espencerOT @elliemidds I think there are so many of us. We receive little to no support and are treated incredibly badly. It could be so very different. Things will change, our voices are growing louder.
@espencerOT @JoPavlopoulou @BBCNewsnight If news outlets (print and TV) are not going to invest the time to look at something meaningfully or critically, then I wish advocates & clinicians would refuse to engage with them, rather thinking they are doing something to 'help' in a 10 minute slot. It's so irresponsible.

@elliemidds Open plan offices, lack of alternative environments, lack of adequate instruction, lack of knowledge on autistic limitations. All things I've found in my current job that are really effecting what I can and can't do.

@elliemidds I often wonder if that statistic is impacted by how many low-support needs Autistic folks are in full time work undiagnosed and struggling in their 20s. So many of us burn out of FT employment in our 30s! Happy you found a situation that works for you most of the time 💖
@elliemidds I worked most of my adult life. Successfully in most peoples eyes until burnout in my early 40’s and perimenopause. We are very vulnerable in mid life, especially if working. I haven’t been able to return to work a decade later.
@n_y__l_a @BBCNewsnight They mentioned some of that, just missed all the dead and dying people, and while i think about it, all those who end up misdiagnosed, and/or on psych wards... I hate this week/month. It just creates more work.
@KieranRose7 @BBCNewsnight Or that the parents of autistic and ADHD children are very likely autistic and/or ADHD themselves, and by identifying and learning about their neurodivergence and what helps, they are more likely to be able to better support said children as well as recognise autism/ADHD in them.
