PENEMUAN BERSEJARAH DI MALAYSIA! Buat julung kalinya, bukti fosil gajah purba Stegodon telah ditemui di Semenanjung Malaysia! Satu pasukan penyelidik dari Jabatan Geologi Universiti Malaya, Naturalis (Belanda) dan Macquarie University (Australia) telah menemui fosil gigi susu Stegodon. Penemuan luar biasa ini dibuat ditemui di sebuah gua batu kapur di yang terletak di Gopeng, Perak. Mengapa Penemuan Ini Sangat Penting? ⏳ Usia Purba: Kajian saintifik menggunakan kaedah pentarikhan pIR-IRSL dan U-series menganggarkan fosil ini berusia antara 199,000 hingga 233,000 tahun dahulu! Ini meletakkannya dalam zaman Pleistosen Tengah Akhir. 🔬 Teknologi Canggih: Fosil itu ditemui terbenam separa pada dinding gua. Penyelidik menggunakan imbasan micro-CT (µCT) untuk mengkaji dan membina semula model 3D gigi tersebut tanpa perlu mengeluarkannya dari dinding gua batu kapur batu breksia 🧬 Ciri-ciri Unik: Gigi (dikenali sebagai PRK_SC_P.01) ini menunjukkan beberapa perbezaan saiz dan morfologi berbanding spesies Stegodon lain yang ditemui di rantau ini (seperti S. orientalis dan S. trigonocephalus). Penemuan ini memberi gambaran baharu bahawa kawasan tropika Asia Tenggara suatu ketika dahulu menjadi habitat utama mamalia besar. Satu lagi penemuan bertaraf dunia dari bumi Malaysia!
