I make the case he was the most influential person of the 20th C. One invention. But it was the American spirit he brought through it. He left his job with Bell in NYC when they shared a manual that described office furniture staff was allowed to have based on corporate rank (he realized they could never innovate if they were wasting resources on such nonsense). So he moved to Silicon Valley as the first tech tenant, but went against his Nobel winning boss when he wouldn’t bet on silicon for transistors, which Bob knew NASA would need due to heat resistance. He got the NASA contract as a startup and helped put a man on the moon. He also flipped this invention into the transistor radio, setting up American cultural dominance in pop music and its media. He more or less invented VC as a result of leaving his original Silicon Valley gig, and promoted the spirit to strike out on your own amongst his staff, which led to HP and others. He kept his desk in the middle of an open floor plan to keep his ear to the ground, closing the loop on corporate hierarchy probs from NYC high rises and created the flat corporate hierarchy that dominated tech. And finally he was Steve Jobs surrogate father, helping put his invention, the microchip in every persons pocket through the greatest consumer tech entrepreneur in word history. The intensity of the hyper-partisanship and profound division we currently inhabit becomes most apparent to me whenever I comment on what I regard as the occasional unforced errors of President Donald J. Trump. Any balanced commentator has experienced the bizarre sensation of being aggressively strafed from both sides simultaneously—for insufficient criticism on the one hand, or insufficient loyalty on the other. Yet one must call it as one sees it. As someone who has known Donald Trump personally for three decades, and as a presidential historian whose works on two American presidents stand as the official biographies recommended by their respective presidential libraries, my assessment is that while President Trump, like all of us, is not without flaws, he is a good man, and in my considered judgment he has, on balance, been a good president. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and can agree or disagree. But let me propose this litmus test: if you cannot list at least five of Trump’s major accomplishments or five of his failures, you are almost certainly inhabiting one of the two prevailing echo chambers. And my recommendation as an unlicensed psychologist is to switch off your computer or smart phone, draw a few deep breaths, step outside for a walk if the weather is nice, embrace your children or spouse if you are lucky enough to have them nearby, and remember that life is short.

People will chase meaning their whole lives and overlook this one thing. Nothing is better.

I needed to move a sofa. I mentioned this to an American. He said, "You know anybody with a truck?" I did not know anybody with a truck. He looked at me with real concern. Not pity. Concern. The way you look at a man who has told you he does not have a name. "You gotta know somebody with a truck." I asked how one acquires such a person. He said, "You just do." This is the third time I have received that answer in this country. It is the answer to everything here. You just do. There is no process. There is only the eventual fact of having. He said, "Ask Kevin." I do not know a Kevin. He said Kevin like I should. He said it the way you say a shared uncle. I met Kevin four days later. Kevin owns a truck. Kevin does not own a truck for himself. Nobody owns a truck for themselves. Kevin owns a truck for a fifteen mile radius. Inside I said: THIS MAN HAS TAKEN A VOW. HE DID NOT ANNOUNCE IT. HE SIMPLY PURCHASED A BED AND ACCEPTED THE CONSEQUENCES. Kevin arrived on Saturday. He brought the truck. He also brought a second man. I had not asked for a second man. The second man's name is Tony. Tony came because Kevin came. Tony did not know me. Tony did not ask what we were moving. Tony brought gloves. They moved the sofa in eleven minutes. I offered them money. Both of them laughed at the same time, which felt rehearsed and was not. I asked what I owed them. Kevin said, "Buy the pizza." That is the price. That is the entire economy. The truck costs one pizza and the pizza is not negotiable and the pizza is also not expensive and everyone knows what size. Inside I said: THE FEE IS FIXED ACROSS THE ENTIRE NATION AND WAS SET BY NO ONE. We ate on the floor because the sofa was against the wall and none of us wanted to be the first to sit on it. Tony told me his daughter plays soccer. I asked if she is good. He said, "She's aggressive." I still think about that. Three weeks later, Kevin texted me. "You free Sunday? Helping Tony move a fridge." He did not ask if I wanted to. He informed me of a fridge. Inside I said: I HAVE BEEN CALLED UP. I DID NOT ENLIST. THE PAPERS WERE FILED ON MY BEHALF. I went. I moved the fridge. I have no truck. I contributed only arms. Afterward, a man I had never met asked me if I knew anybody with a truck. I said, "Yeah, I got a guy." I have a guy. I am somebody's guy now, too. Tony has told two people about me. He describes me as "the guy who's strong for his size." I have never been prouder of a sentence in my life.

Both my parents have passed away, my kids are both double digits now, and I am not far from 50. Time is going by in warp speed. I’m certainly no life expert, but it’s hard for me to imagine if the point isn’t just to be present and collect experiences, I don’t know what it is.

How an electrician’s custom-built "lobster trap" security system caught three separate copper thieves. Between 2022 and 2024, three separate copper thieves attempted to break into Ray Delgado's workshop shed. Remarkably, all three individuals were apprehended in the exact same manner, thanks to a highly creative security system designed by the homeowner. Delgado, a retired master electrician, had outfitted his workshop with four-gauge copper wiring amounting to roughly eight hundred pounds of material that was worth more than his personal truck at current scrap metal prices. Knowing his workshop was a prime target for theft, he decided to wire the building's security alarm entirely by himself. Instead of just alerting the authorities, the system was engineered so that cutting any single wire immediately triggered a backup electrical loop. This loop instantly activated blinding industrial floodlights, a piercing one-hundred-decibel siren, and a heavy-duty electromagnetic deadbolt on the main shed door. Every single intruder was found by local authorities standing trapped in the exact same corner, completely disoriented by the noise and lights, still clutching their bolt cutters. The setup worked so flawlessly that the Prescott Police Department eventually nicknamed the shed "the lobster trap."

I am a farmer and the outright owner of a $400,000 John Deere combine, and this morning a sensor decided I am not allowed to drive it. The sensor was working perfectly. That was the problem. An emissions reading drifted, the machine did what the manual calls a derate and everyone out here calls limp mode, and now I have a full tank, a full engine, and 3 miles an hour. It is October. The forecast is rain Thursday. The corn does not care about the settlement. I did everything you are supposed to do. I bought it outright. I did not lease. I have the title, the manual, the torque specs, and 40 years of knowing which bolt is which. I can rebuild the engine on a tailgate. What I cannot do is tell the engine it is allowed to run. Because the thing that stopped it is not a part. It is a permission. The reset lives in software, the software lives with the dealer, and the dealer is 90 minutes away and booked through Friday. So I called. I always call. That is the instruction, and I follow the instruction. They said someone could come Monday. I said the crop will be down by Monday. They said they understood. I have learned that when a company says it understands you, it means it has written down that you were told. Yesterday the FTC announced I won. Right to repair. 10 years of it. I read the whole thing at the kitchen table with the combine sitting dead in the field I can see from the window. Here is what I learned about winning. The settlement says I get the same software the dealer gets, eventually, on a schedule they report every 60 days. It does not say the software arrives before the rain. It does not say the machine will listen to me tomorrow. It says that someday, carefully, I will be allowed to ask it the same way the dealer asks it. I own the steel. I always did. I just found out I have been renting the word go, and the lease has 10 years left, and the corn is still in the field.

They crossed a line with this condos-for-housing grift. No one gets EVs or Telesat: - for years this govt has corruptly wasted billions of public money competing against market forces in EVs and satellites. No one got how corrupt that was because those aren’t assets people understand. Everyone gets houses: - but everyone understands condos, fees and mortgages - and sale prices that make no sense. - everyone knows the Vancouver Liberal condo developers are donors that supported our fed housing minister when he was mayor of Vancouver. And they know the Chinese money they used to prop up Vancouver is going away. So watching the government use Canadians’ tax dollars to buy mispriced poorly made Vancouver condos off of donors who can’t sell them but won’t lower their prices? That hurts. People are watching their kids leave Canada at record levels now - for better jobs, houses and economic options - and then they watch their govt give billions to donor developers instead of letting the prices drop? It’s not washing this time. Everyone - even the CBC - understands house and mortgage math. And this is the most corrupt thing they can imagine doing with public money. And they’re right.

Luxury condo. buildings carry big monthly strata fees. Once Carney bails out his developer buddies buying these luxury empty condo's who will cover these ongoing monthly strata fees in so-called "affordable" housing?

This latest Liberal announcement to bail out billionaire condo developers in Vancouver with taxpayer money is crazy. Buying up thousands of empty condos at above-market prices just to save developers from having to lower prices and sell at a loss. This is crony capitalism at its worst. It also doesn’t actually create any new housing units. The condos were already built. All it does is keep Vancouver’s real estate artificially inflated, instead of allowing prices to moderate as the market would otherwise demand. It screws over young Canadians and those trying to enter the housing market while lining the pockets of those who’ve already made BILLIONS over the past few years. But hey - it’s a great deal for all those Vancouver developers who threw fancy fundraisers for Carney and Trudeau!
