Experienced clinicians often say that what happens in the first session will appear throughout the treatment. This is true for all early encounters, so watch opening gambits carefully. How we begin tells us how things will go or end, whether we are aware of it or not.

I work from a psychodynamic perspective, but am not a psychoanalyst. I'm enthusiastic about psychoanalytic theory, but not at all expert. I'm common and that's the point. If psychodynamic theory isn't available to everyone, it will soon be available to no one.

Clinicians are not technicians. Psychotherapy creates a space for the patient to have an experience that is often emotionally charged. We are not mechanics who dole out techniques.

1/ I made a list a while ago, about therapy🚩 that should make you think long & hard about whether you’re seeing right therapist Starting another, please add -agrees with nearly everything you say -diagnoses people in your life -gives you advice -mawkish displays of “empathy"
4/ -claims to know in advance how long it will take to resolve your difficulties -engages in any activity during therapy sessions other than doing therapy -hugging, holding, physical touching -refer to any intervention or method as "proven" or "scientifically proven"

I've known many leaders of different schools of #psychotherapy. Striking how similar they are in personality & their work with patients. Differences between therapies are more at level of jargon & theory than actual practice. Past time to unify therapies/End competing splits.
