I understand why many Asian families feel frustrated in elite admissions systems. In intensely competitive environments, there is a real perception — and sometimes evidence — that exceptional academic performance still does not guarantee admission. That feeling should not be dismissed. But admissions committees also confront another reality: if you have 100 applicants from privileged, high-performing educational pipelines with nearly identical scores, resumes, research access, tutoring, and opportunities, it is not irrational to also value the applicant who achieved similar academic success despite poverty, instability, underfunded schools, family hardship, or lack of institutional advantages. That is not abandoning merit. It is recognizing that achievement exists in context. And medicine especially is not merely selecting expert test takers. It is selecting future physicians who will care for human beings across every class, culture, language, and circumstance in society. The irony is that many people who defend “objective merit” often become deeply uncomfortable the moment merit is evaluated in anything broader than a percentile ranking.

Today is Trans Day of Visibility. Trans, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming people have always been here — from the hijra of India to the Diné nádleehi to the leaders who built the modern LGBTQIA+ movement here in New York. Your existence is not up for debate. Your lives are not a political issue. We’re fighting for a city where every trans New Yorker can live openly, safely, and with joy.

in the entire history of the olympics (more than 10,000 athletes each summer games and 3,000 each winter) since 1896, this would have applied to one (1) woman who did not place in anything

This is exactly the problem. You can't take the "move fast and break things" mentality of Silicon Valley into the federal government, a place where if you break things, people die, or have their rights violated, or can't access essential services.

Musk: I should say we will make mistakes. We won't be perfect. But when we make a mistake we'll fix it quickly. So for example with USAID, one of the things we accidentally canceled briefly was Ebola prevention.

Walked by this picture at the hospital today and I’ve just been staring at it in awe for minutes now. The uneven italicization. The fact that the tag line initially makes you think of 9/11. The unintentional anti-cop messaging. It’s perfect

Request for help: They are keeping Padfoot at least overnight and the low estimate of the cost is $2400-$2600, which is literally a full month’s rent for us. That doesn’t include the $100 evaluation or any additional measures they might need to do. She’s never been alone before.

My little dog got into hot cocoa mix and I don’t know how much she ate or how long ago, but she’s not acting normal and I can’t stop crying. I called my mom and she’s calling her boss to see if she can leave work early but I’m so scared.
