in general, gen z culture doesn’t have a norm for greeting/acknowledging people they don’t already know. Their custom is headphones/eyes down until engagement is required. It’s a “don’t speak unless spoken to” culture. This of course feels dehumanizing to anyone older

You guys probably don't realize how many young men I talk to every month who send me messages like this. At least 50 DM's like this in the last year. Often, they're depressed or suicidal, living at mom's place -- truly lost. Many take my advice, and it seems to work for them. One kid was on the brink, gonna off himself, sexually abused for his whole childhood, caught a drug charge, did some time, and was basically in "hikikomori mode." I had him call me and told him to buy a Greyhound bus ticket TONIGHT more than 2,000mi away. Told him what to pack, how much money to bring, where to sleep, how to hitchhike, etc. Told him it'd be better than dying and he agreed. He did it, deleted all his socials, went off the grid for like 3 months. Finally emailed me from a town in Alaska. He'd bussed to Boise, hitchhiked the Al-Can highway, and found himself a job in the fishing industry. Had $5k saved and was in the process of buying a 1.5ac plot in WV sight unseen. Was dating a native gal and intoned he might marry her. No idea where he's at now, but I think it's quite likely he's not dead. I consider that a massive W. And I believe I can say similar things about a handful of some of the other lads I've talked to on here in similar circumstances. Gives me hope after losing more than a dozen friends to suicide and drugs. A couple friends of mine think this could wind up being vocational for me. After a life of suicidal ideations and a handful of failed attempts at taking my own life, I genuinely feel well-equipped to talk despondent young men through their despair and get them to get their asses in gear.
