Paul saying the quiet part out loud. For law firms, having an AI initiative is all about handling an objection from the client so the partner can make the sale.
that daniel dennett died just as LLMs took off is a real tragedy for the intellectual commons, so many are stuck in the cartesian theater
@nic_carter I have the receipts x.com/_ujval/status/…
These guys always are asking "what if Claude cures a disease?" while wasting their tokens producing mid lit slop. idk man, I'm all for Claude brute-forcing a cure for cancer. That's not what you're doing, though!
Which journal? What purpose? Why? These are concerns of careerist academics because they can only think of a research paper with regard to their career, which is fine. Thing is the conversation is no longer about which journal and what purpose. It's about developing tools that
I could not disagree more here. First of all, moral certainty and being assured of your own moral superiority (as EAs and consequentialists often are) tends to result in great harms done. All the great crimes of history have been justified by the purported moral superiority of those committing it. You can object to this, but in my view most EAs are committed consequentialists, which generally involves overlooking some near term harms in service of long term utility or goodness. It is a philosophy that by its very nature justifies harms that would otherwise be abhorrent to us. Second, I am much more cautious of someone who has a high degree of moral certainty than I would be of someone who is a skeptic and defaults to their own intuitions. The former is much more likely to justify atrocities. As CS Lewis said: "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive." Third, the outward appearance of virtue is often a tactic used by an individual aiming to conceal a much greater vice. We have an existing high profile example of this in the EA world: SBF's campaign to present himself as a highly moral consequentialist vegan boy genius. Or see predators like Jimmy Savvile being very active philanthropists. You could say I am smuggling in the assumption that EAs and the Anthropic crowd specifically have higher moral certainty, as opposed to just "a tendency to think more about morality". I stand by this. I have seen them in action. I read all their literature. They seem committed to the notion that a single firm should be in charge of the model that the whole world consults, and that firm should be them, and that they should be solely tasked with "aligning" the model (as in: defining the moral framework that the model uses), and the personally principally tasked with that alignment should be an Anthropic employee, namely Amanda Askell. Anthropic already has imbued their models with latent racial preference [1] a general liberal bias [2] and a progressivism that exceeds that of any single country [3]. it stands to reason that the "philanthropic" activity by these people will follow these same value patterns. If I had to guess, the philanthropy these people engage in will follow the pattern of Mackenzie Bezos - done sloppily, at massive scale, with little oversight, and funding questionable ultra-progressive organizations. The control that AI firms and their executives wield over society is an existential question and it will not be settled in a manner that the EAs long for. It is politically intolerable for these companies to grow into valuations in the tens of trillions while most workers are laid off. Datacenters will burn and their equity will be expropriated long before this happens. [1] arctotherium.substack.com/p/llm-exchange… [2] techrxiv.org/doi/full/10.36… [3] arxiv.org/html/2603.2812…
i don’t trust “effective altruism” because it does not seem to have enough humility in the face of human complexity, the depths of evil and the heights of good
A group of contracts professors wrote some short-answer contracts questions, wrote answers, and then did a blind-test comparison between AI-written answers and the answers of the other professors. The AI-written answers were generally rated as better. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…
It’s not a comms problem, true; it IS a “you used public policy channels as a way to inflate your valuations at the cost of panicking the public and are now reaping what you sowed” problem
the frontier labs don’t have “comms problems”. reality right now has a comms problem. what is happening is a little scary and there’s no nice words anyone could say, especially not those profiting from it, that’ll make it feel that much better

More lawyers misusing AI: 7th Circuit weighs in. Lawyer submitted appellate brief "two dozen fabricated quotations, seven cases wrongly identified ..., erroneous legal propositions, and assertions of fact flatly contradicted by the record." The contract lawyer who wrote the brief admitted to using ChatGPT. Counsel admitted he did not review the brief before filing. He told the court, "I assume when an attorney ... writes briefs that they're following the rules." Court says by signing his name to briefs without reviewing them was "egregious misjudgment" and is "inimical to the administration of justice." He will pay $5,000 in sanctions. The contract lawyer said she used ChatGPT to "grammar check" the brief but not "to perform any legal research." She said ChatGPT hallucinated facts and caselaw and inserted them into the brief, but she "in no way instructed or prompted ChatGPT to do any of that." The court had doubts: "It is unlikely that such pervasive errors would arise through a grammar check." Court refers the matter to the Illinois disciplinary commission. "There is little doubt that litigants and courts will develop sound and workable practices governing AI usage in due time, but that point has not yet arrived."
