If you can't easily run a 10 mile long run at the beginning of a 16 week training plan, you have NO BUSINESS racing a marathon in 16 weeks. Willpower, adrenaline, or motivation is not a substitute for proper long runs. The hubris runners show around the marathon is stunning.

People overestimate what they can accomplish in a day and underestimate what they can accomplishment in a year, let alone a decade. Progress is non-linear. It includes peaks, valleys, and plateaus. This is why consistency and patience are crucial.
