OTD 2000 "Speed - The Ride" opened at the Sahara Hotel on the #LasVegas Strip. Premier Rides built the coaster as part of the NASCAR Café addition. The ride reached 70mph with a g-force of 3.5. It closed May 1, 2011 and eventually sold for scrap.
OTD 2005 Steve Wynn opened @WynnLasVegas on the site of the former Desert Inn on the #LasVegas Strip. The opening coincided with his (then) wife's birthday.

Happy 91st birthday to @imcarolburnett . She premiered in #LasVegas in 1962, when Jack Entratter booked the comedian at the Sands Hotel. And, as in the @summacorp archive pic, she's played Caesars, too.
Even back in 1957, train service to #LasVegas used the "beat the traffic" marketing angle. It was about a 5+ hour journey through the desert and cars rarely had AC.
From 1956-68 Union Pacific ran the "City of Las Vegas" train service. Sit back and relax and enjoy a free buffet. You had plenty of time to enjoy the scenery - Depart LA 8AM arrive #LasVegas at 3PM. About $215 (today's money) round-trip.
OTD 1978 ABC TV Network introduced the nation to Dan Tanna with the airing of the pilot of "Vega$" as a movie of the week. The series, filmed on location in #LasVegas, will debute September 20.
Just prior to opening in #LasVegas Elvis appeared on the Milton Berle Show on April 3, 1956. Berle's TV show was broadcasting live from the USS Hancock docked at the San Diego Naval Station.

@_GrandPaD One thing about the Brightline, it will connect Vegas to Victorville Station -- and Vegas will be back on the Amtrak network. Train travelers, like me, will be able to connect to Vancouver and even the East coast.
