I say collective/collaborative because research engagement is about more than knowledge and skills (although it is that, too). It’s about culture, professional conversation and ways of thinking and operating, not just about ticking boxes or competencies. #trcEDchat
If we are serious about teachers and school leaders engaging with and in research (not just saying we are) then we need to invest time, resources and leadership into building the collective, collaborative capacity of our staff. #trcEDchat
A4 In #transformationalPL I argue that capacity building in this space is imperative, but that we must be cautious before jumping on new bandwagons. We should judiciously plan PL and consider internal expertise as well as shiny outside experts. #trcEDchat #edureading

As a self-confessed ‘pracademic’ with a foot in (full-time) teaching and school leadership and (unpaid) research and academic writing, I’m well aware of the time engagement with research can take. That time beyond the job is not something we can expect of teachers. #trcEDchat
Rather, school systems and leaders need to find ways to embed research engagement into the job. #trcEDchat
A3 A danger is being solely led by research or research rhetoric. Research needs to be considered in conjunction with professional judgement and contextual conditions. Limitations include time, cost, access and oversimplification. See cem.org/blog/evidence-… #trcEDchat
A particular bugbear of mine is the casual and constant use of ‘the research says’ or ‘research tells us’ without any explanation of what research or under what conditions, or with what limitations something was found. #trcEDchat
Claims and rhetoric abound in education. ‘Research’ should not be a buzzword, tagline or marketing spiel. We need to be able to draw back the curtain on research and understand in what ways it is relevant to our system, our school and our students. #trcEDchat

Ultimately, though, schools need to work with their own staff (where they are at), their own school strategy, and with the resources available. Leadership is also key. This means that engaging with research might look different in different schools. #trcEDchat

I say collective/collaborative because research engagement is about more than knowledge and skills (although it is that, too). It’s about culture, professional conversation and ways of thinking and operating, not just about ticking boxes or competencies. #trcEDchat
If we are serious about teachers and school leaders engaging with and in research (not just saying we are) then we need to invest time, resources and leadership into building the collective, collaborative capacity of our staff. #trcEDchat

As a self-confessed ‘pracademic’ with a foot in (full-time) teaching and school leadership and (unpaid) research and academic writing, I’m well aware of the time engagement with research can take. That time beyond the job is not something we can expect of teachers. #trcEDchat

A particular bugbear of mine is the casual and constant use of ‘the research says’ or ‘research tells us’ without any explanation of what research or under what conditions, or with what limitations something was found. #trcEDchat

Ultimately, though, schools need to work with their own staff (where they are at), their own school strategy, and with the resources available. Leadership is also key. This means that engaging with research might look different in different schools. #trcEDchat
