Many wish there were more they could do as a citizen in light of election results. Hiring criteria could be an actionable thing that could have real impact, and be feasible for busy PIs. A "highly motivated" candidate might look different on paper than we think.

The probability of becoming a successful scientist according to publication record is due to interaction of independent *random* variables. i.e. not merit alone. Reminds me of a quote: in order to escape poverty, nothing can go wrong in your life for 20 consecutive years.
