Nigerians will spend one minute complaining about how godfather politics has destroyed the country, then spend the next minute attacking Peter Obi for not imposing his choice candidates during the NDC primaries.
Dear Young Nigerians, One lesson from the 2023 elections, particularly in Lagos, should never be forgotten. In the period following the presidential election and leading up to the governorship election, we witnessed a troubling shift in public discourse. Conversations that should have focused on competence, governance, development, and the future of our nation were gradually diverted towards tribal sentiments, ethnic divisions, and unnecessary suspicion among citizens. Many sincere and well-meaning Nigerians participated in these conversations without realising that they were being drawn into narratives carefully designed by others. Throughout history, whenever politicians find it difficult to compete on ideas, performance, character, or vision, some resort to exploiting the fault lines of ethnicity, religion, and identity. Their calculation is simple: a divided people are easier to manipulate than a united people. Today, I see similar efforts emerging again, sometimes in more subtle and sophisticated ways. Narratives are planted, amplified, and circulated, often by individuals who genuinely believe they are defending a worthy cause, without recognizing the broader agenda behind such campaigns. Let me state clearly that Pastor Enoch Adeboye remains one of the foremost fathers of faith in our nation. For decades, he has consistently preached the virtues of peace, prayer, love, reconciliation, and national unity. Even when faced with provocation, his response has always reflected humility, restraint, wisdom, and grace. At 84 years of age, it would be unfair for young and able-bodied Nigerians to transfer to him responsibilities that properly belong to them. The task of building a better Nigeria rests primarily on the shoulders of the younger generation. It is their duty to lead the conversations, champion the reforms, and drive the positive change our nation urgently requires. We must be careful not to become instruments in the hands of those who secretly nurture division while publicly preaching unity. In most cases, their target is not the individual being attacked; instead, it is the person who is attacking. Their real objective is to weaken the bonds that hold us together as one people and one nation. I therefore urge all young Nigerians: do not allow anyone to recruit you into hatred. Do not allow anyone to weaponise your ethnicity, your faith, or your admiration for respected leaders. Question every narrative. Verify every claim. Follow the facts. Resist manipulation. The Nigeria of our dreams can only be built by citizens who refuse to be divided, who choose unity over hatred, and who place our collective future above narrow interests. A New Nigeria is POssible. -PO
On this World Nurses Day, I would like to take a moment to appreciate all the nurses and midwives in our dear nation, who occupy a very special place and play very critical roles in our health sector. As one who has been on the vanguard of investing in our critical sectors of human and national development, I have always maintained that you, our dear nurses, are the heart of our health sector. Over the years, I have traversed different corners of our nation supporting different schools and colleges of nursing and midwifery because I understand the inevitable role you play in our healthcare delivery. As you mark this special day, I wish to, firstly, thank you for all your efforts and sacrifices. Your compassion, sacrifice, and resilience keep our nation alive. And secondly, I wish to encourage you not to relent in your service to humanity. Nigerian nurses work under some of the toughest conditions with dignity and courage. From physical and mental stress to high patient-to-nurse ratios, to lack of equipment and poor working environments, your resilience keeps our health sector going. And beyond the shores of the nation, our nurses have continued to make exploits on the global stage. From leading the next generation research in nursing practice to championing excellence in clinical practice—many Nigerian nurses have written their names on the sands of time and lifted our national banner high. I celebrate you all. My firm commitment to you all remains this — we will build a New Nigeria where your hard work and sacrifices will never go unnoticed. We will invest in your education and training to ensure that you remain competitive on the global stage. Happy World Nurses Day to you all. A New Nigeria is POssible. -PO
@BSAT_Properties Good idea. However, this one below, solar roofing tiles (sheets) is more advisable and visible to use in Nigeria.
Troubling Developments from the citadel of learning. The reason Universities are regarded as an ivory tower is because its seen as centres for pure, isolated intellectual thought. It's therefore worrisome when they are increasingly pressured to operate outside this norm. Today, I was scheduled to be at Obafemi Awolowo University at 9am prompt to deliver a keynote lecture, before proceeding to Ibadan for the opposition parties' political summit scheduled to commence at 12noon. The invitation was extended to me several months ago, and adequate preparations had been made. Regrettably, I received the news that the event would no longer be held in the University as planned. While such occurrences may be dismissed in isolation, it is important to state clearly that this has now happened more than ten times. This is no longer incidental; it points to a troubling pattern that should concern all well-meaning Nigerians. My alma mater, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka was not excluded. The family of one of the renowned UNN Vice Chancellor late Professor Frank Ndili had planned an annual lecture on his behalf and the inaugural lecture was to be delivered, but on the scheduled date it was cancelled by the University authority. These are not merely personal inconveniences; they raise deeper questions about the kind of environment we are nurturing in our country. Universities are meant to be centres of learning, open dialogue, and the free exchange of ideas. When platforms for constructive engagement are repeatedly constrained, it reflects a worrying shift away from these ideals. This concern becomes even more pronounced when viewed against my engagements across the world, where I have been privileged to speak and interact freely with students and scholars in respected institutions. In the past 24 months, I have delivered lectures in notable universities globally including Oxford University, Cambridge University, Harvard University, Yale University, Princeton University, Chicago University, University of Pennsylvania, Imperial College, to name a few. Those environments continue to demonstrate openness to dialogue, critical thinking, and shared learning, values that should equally define our own institutions. We must ask ourselves: what kind of nation are we building if spaces meant for intellectual engagement are gradually shrinking? A country’s progress is anchored on its ability to encourage knowledge, debate, and the contest of ideas, not restrict them. Nigeria must work towards becoming a place where ideas thrive, where knowledge is shared without fear, and where our institutions uphold the principles they were established to protect. A New Nigeria is POssible. -PO
@WaleShittu5 @ToksDuttie @peculiarpat1 Very true. Man will be like, I was passing by or in the neighborhood I now decided to visit or stop by 😅😅😅 Did it to some contractors working on roads during his tenure as state governor.
As a governor of Anambra, every senior prefect in the state had a direct contact with Governor Peter Obi. Why? He wanted them to report what was wrong in their schools directly to him, if you call him, he would personally come and check it out. The man’s humility and simplicity is not performative. It’s really somehow that over a decade later he comes out to contest elections in the country and you’re seeing videos of him carrying his bags like he has always done and you’re calling it “performative and theatrics”. He’s not even doing it for you to applaud him. Baba is just being him.
The bail granted to @AbdulMahmud01 in June 2023, following his arraignment before a Magistrate Court in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, was reportedly granted on self-recognisance and carried no formal conditions, according to statements attributed to him and reports from credible sources covering the matter. Under Nigerian law, particularly as guided by the Administration of Criminal Justice Act/law and established judicial precedents, a court may revoke bail only upon clear and substantiated grounds. These typically include: 1. Breach of any specific conditions imposed (e.g., failure to report to authorities, interference with witnesses, or absconding risk). 2. New evidence suggests the defendant poses a substantial flight risk, may obstruct justice, or has committed further offences. Material change in circumstances warrants reconsideration in the interest of justice. In this instance, the Senior Magistrate is reported to have cited an alleged violation of bail conditions as the basis for revocation on 27 February 2026, leading to the remand order. It is worth noting that the parent bail granted to @AbdulMahmud01 was without any condition. Hence, it is procedurally irregular for the Court to do a U-turn when no condition has been flouted. Our constitutional framework and international commitments affirm that bail, once lawfully granted, should not be withdrawn arbitrarily; any revocation must follow transparent, fair proceedings that respect fundamental rights. Perhaps, we are no longer a nation governed by law. From the look of things, we are now a country where judicial discretion can be exercised capriciously. Well, the rule of law demands vigilance to ensure that every citizen, especially those who advocate for justice, receives impartial treatment. @AbdulMahmud01's ordeal is most horrible, to say the least.
Why the Controversial tax law should be paused? It is now undeniable that the tax laws have been fundamentally altered, and even a firm as esteemed as KPMG has pinpointed 31 critical problem areas, from drafting errors to glaring policy contradictions and administrative gaps. This revelation should prompt every responsible government to take immediate action. Even more alarming is the fact that it took private meetings between the National Revenue Service and KPMG for these serious issues to be acknowledged. If experts require closed-door discussions to navigate the complexities of our tax laws, what hope does the average Nigerian have of comprehending the obligations being imposed on them? Taxation transcends mere fiscal policy; it represents a social contract between the government and its citizens. You cannot enforce a social contract that isn’t understood or trusted. Globally, tax policies are justified by delivering tangible benefits to citizens: improved healthcare, better educational systems, job opportunities, infrastructure development, and social safety nets. This is what the social contract signifies. In Nigeria, the narrative is all about how much more the government seeks to extract, rather than what it is prepared to offer in return. A tax system devoid of clear public benefits isn’t reform; it is, quite frankly, extortion. Typically, months, if not years, are dedicated to consulting with businesses, workers, and civil society before tax drafts are presented for public discussion, with the ramifications clearly explained. People must be informed not only about their financial contributions but also about the benefits that will ensue. This is how legitimacy is cultivated. Yet, in Nigeria, we have seen no such public consultations or discussions regarding the final tax laws, leaving ordinary citizens completely in the dark about both the regulations and the benefits of the taxes they’re expected to pay. We have hastily pursued collection without securing a consensus and imposed enforcement without providing adequate explanations. Even after the removal of subsidies, Nigerians remain in limbo, waiting for tangible benefits or relief. Instead, they are grappling with skyrocketing food prices, exorbitant transport costs, dwindling purchasing power, and escalating poverty levels. Before we have even begun to address these issues, we are being thrust into an expansive new tax regime, riddled with inconsistencies and producing 31 alarming red flags from a leading global accounting firm. This is not the hallmark of responsible governance. Without trust, taxation feels like punishment. Without clarity, it breeds confusion. Without evident public value, it amounts to robbery. Nigeria cannot afford to place further burdens on its already struggling citizens. What we need is a government that listens, communicates effectively, and prioritises building national consensus. This is the only viable path to genuine reform, unity, growth, and shared prosperity. A New Nigeria is not just a possibility; it is an imperative. -PO

The Farouk Controversy and the Question of Public Responsibility One of the most talked-about public controersies in recent times is the allegation surrounding Farouk Ahmed. Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, alleged that Mr. Farouk, Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), spent about $5 million on the secondary school education of his four children in Switzerland. He called for a full investigation and public explanation. At current exchange rates, $5 million is approximately ₦7.5 billion. In a country with over 18 million out-of-school children — the highest number in the world — this revelation inevitably raises questions of proportionality, public trust, and moral responsibility. Education is one of the greatest legacies a parent can give a child. No reasonable person begrudges parents for investing in their children’s future. Plato, in The Republic, reminds us that “education and upbringing are what make good human beings,” warning that neglect of education harms not just individuals but the entire constitution of society. The issue here, therefore, is not education itself, but scale, context, and moral consequence, especially when such spending is attributed to a public official in a country with extreme inequality. What ₦7.5 Billion Could Do at Home With ₦7.5 billion, it would be possible to build 25 school blocks, at ₦35 million per block, fully covering construction, furnishing, and basic learning infrastructure. This amounts to ₦875 million in capital expenditure. Each block contains 6 classrooms. Each classroom accommodates 40 students. That means: 240 students per block 25 blocks × 240 students = 6,000 students educated every year Each block would employ 18 teachers, giving a total of 450 teachers. At a monthly salary of ₦125,000, each teacher earns ₦1.5 million per year, bringing the total annual wage bill to ₦675 million. After construction (₦875 million) and one full year of teacher salaries (₦675 million), total expenditure is ₦1.55 billion. This leaves ₦5.95 billion from the original ₦7.5 billion. Making the System Self-Sustaining If the remaining ₦5.95 billion is invested in Nigerian government bonds at 19%, it would yield approximately ₦1.13 billion annually. From this yield, allocating ₦10 million per school block per year for libraries, laboratories, utilities, learning materials, meals, and maintenance would cost: ₦250 million annually (₦10m × 25 blocks)This still leaves ₦880 million per year. From this balance: ₦675 million comfortably pays teachers’ salaries every year Over ₦200 million remains as surplus, ensuring reserves, expansion, and long-term stability In effect, the system becomes permanently self-funding, without touching the original capital. A Moral Contrast (Corrected) In simple terms, the amount allegedly spent on the education of four children could establish a self-sustaining education ecosystem that: Educates 6,000 Nigerian children every year Employs 450 teachers. Ironically, Nigerian children educated abroad would benefit even more if those who remain at home were educated to comparable standards to work for them and with them when they return. An educated society produces better governance, safer communities, stronger institutions, and a more dignified nation. It is a win-win. The Larger Question Nigeria has a population of about 240 million people. In a system described by former British Prime Minister David Cameron as “fantastically corrupt,” and by the U.S. President Donald Trump as “a now disgraced country,” it is reasonable to assume that there are at least 2,400 individuals - just 0.0001% of the population - who, like the Farouks, have access to extraordinary resources largely derived from public office. If 2,400 individuals each sacrificed $5 million, it will achieve the following:

Let Our SME's Breath In recent days, we have seen concerning images and reports of local contractors protesting across Abuja and other parts of the country, demanding payment for work they have already completed. Most of these contractors are small and medium-sized businesses that are essential to the economy in various regions, comprising ordinary Nigerians who have delivered vital public services with the expectation that the government would honour its commitments. What is even more troubling is that this situation arises after President Tinubu publicly announced in August that Nigeria had “met and surpassed its revenue target for the year.” With such an impressive record, one would expect increased investment in the economy—specifically in education, healthcare, and programs that alleviate poverty. Yet, the government has still failed to pay contractors. A responsible government cannot claim record revenue while simultaneously leaving thousands of contractors unpaid. This contradiction highlights deeper issues related to transparency in our public finance management and governance. When a government fails to pay contractors, the consequences ripple through the entire economy. Medium and small businesses shut down, workers lose their jobs, families experience hardship, and the nation loses its productive capacity. We cannot build a strong economy when public funds are mismanaged, obligations are ignored, and local businesses are treated as expendable. If our revenue has indeed increased, it should be reflected in timely payments of obligations, the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and reduced borrowing. Meeting our obligations to contractors is not optional; it is a test of honesty, competence, and true leadership. A government that cannot fulfil its commitments cannot be trusted to build a nation. As leaders, we must honour our obligations, manage resources with discipline, and create an economy that works for the people. This is how a nation rises. A New Nigeria is POssible. -PO
