I’m shocked that this needs to be said, but: If you have a student who struggles to read, you should not blame the parents, for not reading enough. Lots of kids with dyslexia struggle to read despite having their parents read to them every day. You don’t know what happens in a kids home. Making assumptions like this is deeply offensive for the parents of kids with dyslexia. It also is a reflective of the disproven whole language model. Kids learning to read is not only a product of reading experience, for many kids it requires explicit instruction. Schools bear the primary responsibility for teaching kids to read, not parents.

@GaabLab Finally. So many dyslexic kids; so many who are now adults in the prison system, where estimates say over 70 percent are undiagnosed dyslexics. So many parents who had to hire expensive tutors just to learn to read. So many kids who cried in front of me. 🥲

Guess what shiny, flashy, novel phonics activity we did today? We didn’t. We made words w magnetic letters & cookie sheets just as we will do 2x/week all year long. Keep routines & materials the same & focus on learning, even if it’s not as exciting to post on social media.

It’s been a rough start to the school year in NYC so I’m reposting this. It’s in the application where the learning sticks. I’m seeing lots of 40-min lessons where sts read and write less than 5 words. That doesn’t work. Implementing a flawed program w/ fidelity ensures failure.

Vouchers and charter schools, many for profit, are killing public education in my state (which 90 percent of parents choose public education).
