Following yesterday's news that a final extension of 42 days has been granted to the winding up petition against Southend United, and the National League's decision to dock the club 10 points, I've submitted this motion to the council alongside some of my colleagues.

Excellent report on @Channel4News We export 80% of N Sea oil. We import 4% of our gas from Russia. And we buy & sell both on the international market which we can’t control. Today’s Govt/Sunak announcements aren’t even spin - they’re total bullshit.

@gpdixon @CllrDent Typical libertarian nonsense from the usual sources. "No-one stop me wanting to do whatever I like and to hell with the consequences"

Even if you don’t believe climate change is man affected… the actions we need to reduce it leave us with clean air, less pollution , clean waters and cheap secure energy? Why the anger against that?

@PatHeron1 @Lynn06783085 @chloeoklenton Remember this is part of a wider pattern. See recent wildfires in california and Australia too. Its the frequency and severity combined that's concerning.

Rhodes is burning...What really matters is not that a Tourist playground burns, its the animals burned, wildlife lost and Nature destroyed...but out headlines talk of cancelled flights and holidays. If we think this is inconvenient..you wait to see the inconvenience of climate refugees, lack of food and water....floods, droughts and war....but lets just carry on leave that to our kids to deal with.

@PerfectMem_bh @CrazyMuseumMum @Cuttsy1982 Not entirely. Climate change is creating the conditions for more frequent and more intense fires. Whether or not it was deliberately started, or started from some other means doesn't really matter. Climate change is affecting the frequency and severity of these fires regardless.

The climate crisis is unfolding very much as experts predicted. Brexit is unfolding very much as experts predicted. Perhaps if politicians started listening to experts instead of pandering to people who think ignorance and prejudice are badges of honour, we might have a future.

I don’t like this sort of politics. Societies are made up of individuals with different backgrounds, opinions, economic interests and moral and philosophical positions. The primary job of politicians in my view is to at least try to navigate these differences (guided of course by their own hopefully well-thought out political philosophy) with the aim of building a stable consensus - a necessary foundation for a well-functioning and prosperous society. That’s very hard of course, but it should be the desired destination. Nobody gets everything they want in a democracy, because a free society is a collection of individuals who hold different views, but also nobody should feel absolutely defeated. This is not compromise in a wish-washy sense of the word - it’s the very essence of and indeed the guarantor of our freedom as individuals. As Feynman memorably said, democracy is based, like science, on a satisfactory philosophy of ignorance; running societies is very hard, and nobody really knows how to do it, so we regularly change direction whilst building on the achievements of the past. Understanding this requires humility, and the instinct to unify rather than to divide. Seeking division therefore runs counter to everyone’s interests because it undermines a key idea underpinning democracy itself - the idea that individuals have legitimately differing views. To Mr Sunak - topically - I would say read some post-war Oppenheimer. He was aiming to persuade national leaders not to do what this article says you want to do, because in the context of countries with atom bombs, that would be literally playing with fire.
