Don't hesitate to experiment and do crazy things with prototypes. Most probably tou will be throwing that prototype to the trash can once yoi tested what you needed. So make sure you bring it to the limit
If you are just starting out a new project you should use some form of version control system. SVN is ome of the easiest to setup. Perforce is powerful and free for up to 5 people. With Git you will have tons of examples around the web.
As a solo developer it is important to know your limits. Don't be discouraged by them. Embrace them. Knowledge is power!
Seems that in Unreal 5.4 some of the BTCompositeNode functions are not marked as a module export. If you overrided CleanupMemory for instance your code will not compile.
There are a lot of ways to tweak hitboxes in games. 1. Frame based vs Trace Based 2. Capsules vs Spheres vs Boxes 3. Attached to Bone vs Static Every game has its own needs, so don't be afraid to experiment.
Nowadays you don't need to understand GLSL or HLSL to write cool shaders. In the same way that you can use Blueprint instead of C++ to create gameplay, in Unreal you can use the Material Editor to create the shaders you need.
Remember that you can modify Unreal default Level Streaming settings. If you have enough CPU time, you can increase the level streaming time allowed in the CPU for faster loading. If the streaming is hogging all the CPU cycles, you can reduce the allowed amount of time.
Unreal has some default systems for AI Perception. But I recommend you take that base and build on top of it. Each game has its own needs, so everyone will require differents things to be built for their project.
I'm now in the position of Lead Gameplay Programmer for an awesome game company. But when I started long ago I did not set out to create games. Initially, I wanted to do Visual FX for movies. Life can take really interesting turns.
I recommend always keeping up to date with the latest Unreal version. If possible have a branch where you update your project the moment a new version appears. That way you will find out early if things break. And you will be able to react fast.
I have started walking every day. Being a game developer can become a really sedentary activity. Take time to take care of your body.
